Thanks, Trump voters. Thanks for thinking we had to “get somebody new in there.” Thanks for wondering how it could be worse. This is just the beginning of how it could be worse. We’ve got allies swimming away for dear life like we’re a sinking ship. Thank you, thank you, thank you ever so much.

To his supporters, this is what “success” looks like. They’ve never had much regard for those effete quiche eating, gun restricting, healthcare providing champions of human rights. They fetishize Putin’s macho thuggish Russia as it comports with their world view.

This is awful for America, but, as you stated, will have no effect on his supporters, and therefore, no effect on his behavior.

They wouldn’t let him just walk in and set up golf courses. So he says fuck the world. That’s really all there is here.

Face it people, Trump is being ruled solely by Putin!

I think Trump remains on Putin’s payroll!

His followers, no. But there’s a large constituency for the status quo and stability. Large, and in many cases very powerful individuals. We’re now at the stage of actually disrupting alliances that have been stable for two or three generations or more. We’re talking about abrogating global treaties that are vital to the planet surviving as viable human habitat. There may be limit to how much boat-rocking that constituency will put up with.

This trip was a mighty success for one Vladimir Putin. In fact, it couldn’t have gone better.

100% correct. Feral trumpers see the Europeans as cultured snobs who live off of America at our expense. Rump tweeted that NATO owes America money and said money is pouring in now as we speak. As far as they’re concerned, the sooner we get them off our backs, the sooner America will be great.

I’m assuming there will come a point in the near future where the Europeans simply walk away from us completely.

Save yourselves.

@mattinpa To the extent that wealthy Europeans will have any dealings with this country, it’ll be predominately within the Blue states.

Libera temet ex inferis.
Free yourself from hell.

BTW it may be no longer accurate to assume Trump can’t lose support in his core base. Two charts from 538:

So for the first time Trump has competently delivered a message – and Merkel got it.

An opinion piece, yes, doesn’t make it any less accurate however, esp. for pointing out things we’re not considering in assessing the future of the orange. (I’ve cited this particular graph before so it may look familiar.)

Second, Mr. Trump is unpopular. It’s still too early for post-Comey fallout polls, but right now his approval rating is at just under 40 percent. He got 46 percent of the popular vote last November. That means he’s lost 13 percent of his voters. If he gets down to the mid-30s, he will have lost around a quarter of his own voters — who were, remember, a minority to begin with.

The Europeans may literally be saying that to the U.S. very soon. Axios is reporting that Trump has told Pruitt and others that he will definitely withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement. Apparently, the EPA will begin publicizing reasons why the accord was bad (for Trump, the primary reason is that President Obama supported it). The destruction of planet earth will be Trump’s legacy.

I agree. However, I do believe that there will become a large environmental divide in this country: some of the Blue states are already working to salvage whatever we can of our environments. Some progress is being made in renewable energy and conservation in those states. The Red states, however, will double down on their quest for a past glory centered around oil, coal and pesticides. And yes, I know this will affect the entire planet. I’m just saying that some of us will have living environments that aren’t total hellscapes.

You’re right - thanks for that small ray of hope.

Remember the good old days when the POTUS was considered the leader of the free world?

This is a serious problem!

America has taken a back seat to being the Leader of the World!

Our forefathers and ancestors have worked hard to gain and maintain this status and many families, including mine, have paid that ultimate price in protecting this Country!

Now, we’ve got a Putin wannabe punk ass, who is dumb and ignorant to our Country’s History!

Trump you are worse of a PUNK than I thought you could ever be! YOU BITCH!

ALL OF THE GOP BITCHES WHO SUPPORT THIS BEAST WILL PAY!

So I guess it’s a given he will now withdraw his application for permits to build a 13-foot-high sea wall at Trump International Golf Links & Hotel Ireland, in Doonbeg, County Clare, Ireland. You know, because FAKE rising seas.
