Discussion: McConnell To Obama: Seek Approval From Congress On Action Against ISIS

The only reason Obama would prefer to bypass congress is that he wants to get something done.

only the rich ones…

On the one hand, you’ll have some Democrats voting against action in Syria because their constituents/base will not support military action under any circumstances. On the other hand, you’ll have plenty of Republicans voting against granting Obama authority to do anything, either because they’ll want Obama to instead just bomb any country east of the EU or because their constituents/base will not support Obama’s authority under any circumstances.

So we’ll be stuck with a very narrow coalition of support among the left, center-left, and center-right, which will take a hell of lot of political capital, cat wrangling and graft to get through both the Senate and the House in time for it to be effective.

Meanwhile, McConnell, Republicans, Chuck Todd, et al, will be jumping out of the woodwork to bash Obama for not taking action and not having the leadership to force congress to grant him the authority that congress asked to grant him in the first place.

Didn’t we already see this play out the last time Congress got Obama to ask them to approve military action in Syria? (To be fair, that strategy did stall time enough for us to achieve our goals of getting Syria to give up their chemical weapons, while avoiding a military conflict that could have made matters worse by empowering ISIL even further. But as long as we’re just discussing the all important prominence of ‘optics’ and abstract leadership…)

Obama could hold a meeting with Boehner, McConnell, McCain, and Graham in which he specifically he got a long list of their suggestions. If he then implemented every last one they’d still be vehemently against him. It’s worse than Lucy and the football because you can at least appease her by giving her what she wants. The only thing Obama could do to appease them is commit suicide. Anything less isn’t enough.

This crap coming from the GOP would be called treasonous behavior in other countries.

McConnell: “when Elizabeth Warren begins to sound like Dick Cheney, you know that there’s pretty broad bipartisan support here for dealing with this group of terrorists.”

With one small difference: Warren isn’t lying like Cheney does all the time.

This is literally Syria all over again:

First, the Congress demands the president do something.

So, the President makes plans to bomb Syria.

Then, they say, “Hey! We didn’t give you permission to do anything, you tyrant!”

So the President comes up with a different plan that doesn’t involve bombing.

And then Congress says, “You’re not going to do anything? You weakling!”

And Mr. President you had best time your approval seeking just right because we aren’t going to be working much until after the elections. In fact, anywhere from about 8:14 Mountain Time to 11:12 Eastern time on days that we all have other plans would be just about right.

Please bring brunch and be prepared for some mini filibusters.

Thanks always,
the asshole, useless, gutless GOP

I sure hope the voters in KY have the good manners to vote McConnell out of office.

Look again. The Terrapin, because he is the Minority Leader in the Senate, thinks he’s got more power and prestige than this uppity “blah person” pretending to be president.

this the turtle heads way of saying ,we can take the credit for what ever you do and still demonize you at the same time if you come to congress first before you act…

This man just can’t win.

Sadly, I agree with McConnell on this. Each and every Senator and Representative should be forced to vote yea or nay, not for some nebulous authorization to do whatever whenever, but specifically for troops on the ground in Iraq

BUT if and only if the vote is scheduled BEFORE THE ELECTION.

No free passes this time for anyone Rand, Hillary, Joe, Ted, Rick…
