Discussion: McConnell: Senate GOP Won't Touch Social Security Without Dem Support

Discussion for article #232200

That word mush is a promise? More like a slightly veiled threat. One sell out Blue Dog Dem., and it’s game on.

“In terms of the Senate we do not intend to be offering unilateral, one party-only entitlement eligibility changes.”—Funny, considering the House just did that, and neither chamber campaigned even once on cutting social security. I call shenanigans.

ANY and I mean any dem that signs on to this needs to be told in no uncertain terms that he (or she) will face a primary challenger next time they come up for reelection

I think the writing is on the wall and the Republicans realize messing with Social Security is a loser for them. I also think McConnell knows it’s go-time for his party and they can’t act reckless. It’s finally time for them to DO instead of just talking shit and obstructing. They are in charge so they are finding it harder and harder to just blame Democrats for everything.

Oh and Boehner can fuck off with his “president is not serious” remark. That is such a broken record right now. The president has proven over and over that he is willing to work with them, even doing things he knows many of his supporters would not approve of, just to get something done. Yet time and time again it’s been shown it’s the Republicans who were not serious because gawd forbid Obama gets something done and fulfill his promise of working across party lines. Now, I think Obama is all out of fucks to give and for that I applaud him.

So hopefully that’s that. Sens. Heitkamp and Donnelly, please, no, just no.

That’s hair-splitting, Turtle. The Tea Party won’t sign onto any program with Democrat support. And you got the last blue dog Dems voted out in November.

Tea Baggers must be galvanizing. On the other hand, I don’t believe a word “Turtle” says.

McConnell is not big on governing and is not an ideologue. He’s big on having power and defeating the Democrats. On that front, he’s somewhat safer than other people here – he has some sense that SS is popular & it’s a sort of third rail. And, unlike the true believer caucus, he doesn’t really care – seems to me – about privatizing it or something. The same thing applies to the debt ceiling. Now, I’m not saying there isn’t danger, especially along the edges. Chipping away with some blue dogs is perfectly possible. But, I don’t just think he is full of shit here.

If they do go after Social Security, I want all those on it hurt. Why? Many of them voted for these RWNJs and they need to feel the pain. Sitting around voting to hurt those not old enough to get it, makes them immoral.

I’m rooting for overreach big time. The RWNJs in the House don’t give a damn at all. They want to destroy all that folks need.

What Dem would be suicidal enough to help the sociopaths of the GOP?

Agreed, McConnell knows it’s already quite likely he’ll only be Majority Leader for two years. If there’s any hope for him to hold onto the majority longer than that it’ll be because he actually worked with the president and got some things done. I think he also knows that in order for him to get some accomplishments under his belt he’s going to have to give Obama some wins as well. Also, because his caucus is now made up of several more tea bagging crazies he’s going to need to attract nearly a dozen Democrats to sign onto legislation. Because there are so few blue dogs left in the Senate, he’s going to have to put forth much more moderate legislation.

Here’s the thing, he’d need to peel off nearly a dozen Democrats in order for any legislation to survive a presidential veto. There aren’t 5 Democrats who’d agree to SS cuts, so any legislation they bring forward most likely wouldn’t even survive a filibuster.

Well that takes care of that then.

And what about those “on it” that voted twice for Pres Obama? Just throw them under the bus to hurt a teabagging Republican? wow
