Dems do have an options. If and when they regain power, they should increase the size of the court to 11 justices and add many other federal judgeships. That would erase the McConnell power grab.
The problem is that if Dems retaliate, it’s only American democracy that suffers. If they don’t in order to prevent that damage, American democracy still suffers because now one actor gets to play badly without ever being punished.
In a nutshell, McConnell’s crowning achievement was a destruction of this country’s norms based democratic system.

Unbelievable how proud he is of his unconstitutional political maneuver. Not to mention the many, many other Obama judicial appointments that never got a hearing. Gorsuch will always have an asterisk by his name as an illegitimate pick. May McConnell have a prison sentence by his name.
Packing the courts is not ok, regardless of how much the Republicans cheat. Fixing voter discrimination, trying to fix campaign finance laws, un gerry mander things, put more rules in place so a drump never happens again, lots of things Dems need to do when they get back power. They need to swiftly undo all the damage drump is doing currently.
What Dems should do is investigate the many crimes that are happening in the government currently, don’t make the mistake like with letting Bush and company off the hook, and this time its just a non stop parade or rules/laws being broken out in the open.
It’s hard to fight when the opposition simply doesn’t care how they look, because their base doesn’t care how they look. It’s hard to fight when the main thing you have on your side is “norms” and the opposition doesn’t care about norms, as long as they get what they want. It’s hard to shame people when they have no shame.
As someone said above, getting down in the gutter and playing by their (lack of) rules hurts democracy and government, and NOT getting down in the gutter and playing by their (lack of) rules hurts democracy and government.

I got even hard-core Trumpsters to agree that McConnell and company were simply not doing there job back when this happened. The duly elected president was duty bound to put someone in that seat, and the Senate was duty bound to vote on it. McConnell and his ilk will eventually reap what they sow. That he is bragging about it is great because it helps emphasize how important such elections are beyond the immediate future, and should help mobilize the Democratic party going forward.
