Discussion: McCaskill's Reelection Path More Complicated After Latest Racial Strife In St. Louis

We can have law and order without shooting people in the back. I don’t think it’s a complicated political statement at all.

McCaskill has always been in a tough reelection position. She wouldn’t have been reelected in 2012 except for the ineptitude of her Tea Party opponent (Todd Aiken). She can’t count on that level of incompetence in the opposition forever.

“And that means finding a way to get black voters excited about her campaign without alienating more culturally conservative whites.”

This is the position a great number of Democrats are in. I don’t know the answer, but I do know that what black folks need politically is more Democrats in Congress, more people to check this evil administration. We should be far less concerned with what she says and more concerned about what she actually does. What she does is vote in a way that advances people of color. That’s all that matters to me.

Real life gets in the way, again.

She’ll run on health care and get votes everywhere.

It is simply deplorable that she has to assuage the many racist voters in Missouri in order to get reelected.

Yeah, I was thinking TPM may want to wait to see if the GOP is successful in gutting the healthcare system before they begin with the Democrats are screwed pieces.

McCaskill and her black leadership allies should get the word out to their base that she needs cover from them. A stronger language from her will change nothing. Her votes in the Senate could make a huge difference.

Totally agree. Sure, it would feel good to have her screaming from the rooftops about the injustice of this ridiculous verdict, but it would be short lived and would do nothing to advance our larger, long term goals.

Police had arrested more than 80 people through the weekend — and some police mocked protesters by appropriating their “Whose streets? Our streets” chant as they did so Sunday night.

So much for professionalism. And they wonder why they’re called pigs? Maybe it’s because they don’t hold themselves to the higher standards required by the basic tenets of justice. Granted, it’d be wrong to paint them all with a broad brush, but if that chant could be heard in the midst of protest teeming with people, there must have been a lot of them doing it.

Missouri is trending Arkansas after being a legitimate swing state for years. It is inconceivable the demented Trump carried it by 18 points! I’d say there’s almost no way McCaskill can thread this needle, she may as well double down on loudly doing the right thing, and lose with dignity. She used up her Hail Mary pass in 2012, but I really don’t see that happening this year.

Have you ever lived in Missouri?

It is simply a fact of life in Missouri. You have to live there a while to understand.

Since Fergison(sp?) I’ve heard soo many … about what and why these murders happened. Now think, imagine what would happen if things were reversed: a Black Policeman shooting a White Man. I’m sure there’d be some that would say: "You’re not taking enough into consideration … I disagree. Mainly because a Black Policeman wouldn’t shoot a white man; he KNOWS what would happen.

The middle name of most R pols is “Lawnorder”. As the disorder, lawnessness, vandalism, and simple stupidity of the alt-left wacks in St Louis increases, the opponents of McCaskill will be pushing this meme.

I worked for 13 years in St Louis. I know several things:

  1. There is a big tension between St Louis and the outlying areas
  2. The standard pattern of rural-red, urban-blue holds.
  3. The issue in her re-election will be a) St Louis County (different from the city) and her ability to attract suburban whites b) her natural talent as a red-state Dem. She does better than many about working the rural turfs. She is like Sherrod Brown or Jon Tester in that regard.

Blocking roads, breaking windows, destroying stuff - she is going to be the big loser in this whole thing

What would be nice is if white people spoke out enmasse against the disgusting injustice that is happening every day in our cities to black people. No jobs, despair, lack of opportunity and the prospect of being shot by a policeman just because you’re black. People with clout need to stand up and be counted instead of sitting in the background saying what a shame. Beyond disgusting.

Yep.

No Akin out there for her to select as her opponent, either. The ones who are lining up are smarter

One might even say not shooting people in the back is a prerequisite for true law and order.
