He’s not trying to switch sides and he hasn’t withdrawn his endorsement, or support, or whatever this week’s flavor the week is vis-a-vis standing alongside a loathsome party leader. I expect this to split along gender lines. Men who support Trump will, as you say, call it locker room talk and dismiss it. Women who support Trump will not dismiss this so blithely.

I’m not sure I agree with that. ‘The base’ of the Republican Party is now where the American people used to be. Starting in the 60s and 70s, the culture started to change, but the Republicans basically clung to the line of ‘You don’t have to change. You’re right, and they can’t take away your right to be an entitled, bigoted jackass.’
So it’s less that ‘the base’ was pushed in that direction, and more that they were allowed and encouraged to stay there, while the rest of us moved on.
