He still has his uses I suppose. Credit where it’s due: he’s 100% correct and I hope he never shuts up about it.
I can forgive GrandPa “Mumbles” McCain the pandering to the right, his bloviating on any number of issues to curry favor with many of the local politically powerful, and all during his campaign for the presidency. Much of it was to be expected. I can never, however, ever…ever forgive him for allowing Wasilla DeVil to be inflicted on the psyche of this republic. Nope…never!
In this one instance, he is certainly an expert on torture and the depravity of those who try to justify it. In this instance, I can only say “Bravo!” Gramps…You’ve earned that.
It means nothing. He voted against his own torture bill.
Can’t think of anything as heinous that is mostly justified simply by “what if…”
McCain is once again an opportunistic idiot. He had the influence to stop this torture program before it even began, but he, like George Bush, preferred to maintain his ignorance, so he could reap political gains. A just outcome of this report would be the resignation of most of the Congress who were in office as this took place. Even Obama can’t escape blame - he is the one who refused to have the Justice Department take up this case and prosecute those who were responsible. Remember, Obama only looks forward, not back.
Q: What do you call a Republican who’s for prison reform?
A: An ex-convict.
Q: What do you call a Republican who believes hurricane relief should be a federal responsibility?
A: A disaster victim.
Q: What do you call a Republican who’s against torture?
A: A former POW.
Q: What do you call an indicted Republican?
A: A recent convert to the cause of civil liberties.
I am no fan of McCain’s, but on this you are wrong. He has spoken out consistently against torture. It is the one thing he has never wavered on. Credit where credit is due, please.
Oh, he’s against it today? It’s so hard to keep track of Johnny Mac’s position on this particular issue.
so he supports war crimes trials? put up or shut up, senator.
A Republican is against a bad thing he has personally experienced. Yay. Might have been better for the world if he’d gotten a little more personal experience with war before he got shot down so maybe he’d be against that.
His hatred of torture is a positive legacy of his brutal, dehumanizing confinement, though it doesn’t seem to have made doodly squat’s difference in affecting opinion on his side of the ideological divide. His Manichean worldview and the unquenchable rage that drives his childish belief in the efficacy of war as a solution to every foreign policy problem, while likely important factors in sustaining him during his captivity, are rather less positive legacies of his captivity long term which, on balance, have done far more harm to him and to the country than his opposition to torture has done good.
$ister$arah will always be mcPalin’s legacy
no matter how many ‘stirring’ speeches he gives.
If McCain is so anti-torture, why did he release Sarah Palin on all of us?
He has my sympathies for being a victim of turture as a POW, and my credit for speaking so adamantly against its use now, but he lost the stage when he chose Mama Bear Palin to be his running mate. That one, single move by him effectively ruined any credibility he ever had.
So he has principles (can a person have only ONE principle?) with regard to torture.
Who has more authority in the Republican party to speak on this issue than John McCain? I applaud him for standing up for what is right here.
Too bad it’s such a rare occurrence for him.
If John McCain had really gone to the mat on this when it first started, it might not have happened.
Great that he now is yelling about how bad it is…and he is absolutely right, but it is WAY too late.
I just can’t keep up with Mr. McDoublespeak! He was all for fit when GWB was in office taking orders from Cheney!!
It’s stunning that in the year 2014 we still have people who can’t wrap their heads around the idea that torture DOESN’T WORK.
I’d always been a fan of the moniker Caribou Barbie, but Wasilla Kardashian is sharp…thanks!
