Discussion: May Asks EU For Short Delay Of Brexit Until June 30

Although she will never win, Theresa May seems to be trying her damnedest to take that “Most Stupid” World Cup from Donald Trump.

Short = 3+ months?

Shorter May: “In the last three months, I have delivered two crushing defeats in Parliament for my shitty-cheese-submarine exit plan. With three more months, who knows how many more crushing defeats I can achieve?”

related - funny thread re: DTjr invoking his dad’s great advice to May - that she didn’t take (thus which is why, according to Fredo, they are in such a mess) - and twitter recalls what that advice was.

The thread picks up after Frum’s tweet which followed Dale’s tweet (the Nardelli tweet opens the thread to read.)

Bur, but, it looked so easy and made great sense.

What an amazing clusterf*ck. By negotiating with her own party instead of sharing the decision, May has given ERG and DUP veto over her every move.

Not sure where this takes us. Barnier yesterday said EU should prepare for “no deal Brexit” and that EU would want to know purpose of an extension. Juncker today says the formal deal is not open for further negotiation. Bercow has told May not to bring the same plan back to Parliament for a vote. And the ERG is hugging itself with glee at the prospect of crashing out of the EU. Hard to know how May could have messed this up more.

The UK Speaker has already ruled that May can’t repeatedly put a substantially similar measure up for a vote in the House of Commons. How does the PM plan to repackage this twice-resoundingly-defeated disaster of an agreement so (a) she’ll be permitted to bring it to the floor again; and (b) she can get the DUP and enough others to swallow it?

Stand down, Madam PM. Even if you’re successful, you’ve lost.

And the EU has also already said that May 23 is their drop-dead date because of european parliament elections. So they may simply reject the extension out of hand. Perhaps May is counting on that, because then Hard Brexit would be the EU’s fault. The weird thing is that I don’t think she’s being paid by the russians.

I’m not sure ERG is quite that homogeneous. Based on what I’ve read, May sees factions within this group she can sway herself. Others within the group will follow DUP, and still others are angling for May’s job.

Oooh, I wonder what the terminally boring and power hungry Theresa “Groundhog Day” May is going to gain from a little extension at the very end of the line. Always pleading with the EU. Pathetic.

How is that “crushing” going Ms. May?

EU should say no extension. Auf Wiedersehen.

Nigel Farage has already been in Europe, campaigning to get at least one member of the E.U. to vote ‘no’ on any request for an extension (the vote must be unanimous to pass).

I’m afraid the chances of a “Hard Brexit” are high - and Putin is rubbing his hands with glee at the possibility.

The DUP already has veto over her every move, beyond Brexit, because they’re propping up her minority government. They’re not even officially in coalition, so they could bring her down at any moment.

I was just wondering what was going on with this.

I don’t know that the EU is going to be sanguine about another delay like this.

That fucker.

The PM is making Trump look competent by comparison. That is a vanishingly low standard that should be humiliating to all involved. It’s as if we are having an Anglo/American competition who can reach the lowest level of incompetence.

And like the Belgian leader asked “delay…but for what?”

She’s presented basically the very same plan three times and been voted down DECIDEDLY, each time.

What would a granted delay do for anyone?

Well, the referendum win was announced the 24th of June, 2016.

So, 3 months added onto 33 months isn’t that much. But it won’t help at all.

Give time for a second referendum?
Or for more MPs to realize that their responsibility is to the well being of the UK first, and the whims of their uninformed constituents is only second?
