Discussion: Maryland's GOP Guv Says Donald Trump Won't Get His Vote

Good for you, Larry!

Off topic, but they found the body of the two year old who was taken by an alligator. Very sad story. I can’ imagine what his father who was with him when it happened is going through. I guess alligators don’t eat humans

“No, I don’t plan to,” Hogan said when asked if he’d vote for Trump. “I guess when I get behind the curtain I’ll have to figure it out. Maybe write someone in. I’m not sure.”

Pssst! Write yourself in! Get your friends to write themselves in, too!

This is so devastating. Tourists would assume that they were safe on prime Disney property - especially if there were no specific warnings about alligators. I’m not sure I could go on living if this were my child, but they have another child to motivate them to move forward. May they someday find some peace and comfort.

Why are you posting that on this story?

A few more like this might give moderate Republicans the balls to step forward and say the same thing. I wouldn’t be surprised if Colin Powell comes out and endorses Hillary, maybe even a Bush or two.

I do know that alligators are several steps up from Trump and a lot less deadly.

You’re right that it’s off topic, but sometimes we just have a gut reaction to some shocking news - I shouldn’t have replied here either.

While I think every repudiation from the GOP Trump gets is great, I’m cynical enough as a Marylander (and citizen of Baltimore) to think that Hogan knows he won his current job with support from a section of crossover Democratic voters…and won’t win re-election in a few years if he loses that support by going all out crazy GOP and supports Trump in the presidential election. I am not a Hogan fan. He’s done a pretty good job of appearing moderate (compared to Erlich) and gaining an overall positive approval rating, but some of his actions toward Baltimore are telling.

I must admit to being a bit split on this. Yes, absolutely, distancing themselves from Trump is the right thing for Republicans – indeed, for all elected officials – to do. But GOP leaders designed the party, the message and their base just such a demagogue as Trump, and I don’t want the people who created Trump’s party to be able to distance themselves so that (with the Kochs’ help) they don’t pay for it in November.

and win

remind the voters of that

If his health holds up, this is the guy to fear in 2020… hell, the base will still be crazy, so scratch that

But if it weren’t, he’d be formidable. He has a mid-60’s approval rating and has surprisingly good marks from the black electorate there. But, as I said before, wouldn’t survive first contact with GOP base in its current iteration.

Suggested sound track for the nightly news segment featuring the GOP elected official(s) du jour announcing “I can not vote for Mr. Trump, but I have no idea for whom I will vote on election day:” Another One Rides the Bus, by Weird Al Yankovic.

True dat.

And I despised that smug asshole Erlich.

Would his actions against Baltimore have anything to do with the unrest or Rawlings-Blake? I’m just curious, not being snarky.

Most MD Repubs are nothing like the GOP base. Gun control laws are strict, and at least in Central MD, the population is quite diverse. Not saying there isn’t bigotry and resentment, but the political climate doesn’t support the kind of wingnut base seen in traditionally red states.

I’m in Maryland and I don’t think he would have won if the Dems didn’t basically roll over and play dead. We were seeing ads for Hogan and none from the Dems until the last month. Hogan didn’t win, the Dems lost. That said, with a Dem state Congress and Senate he hasn’t been able to do much damage here.

Best goddamned Republican I ever voted for! Hogan Strong!

It is somewhat bemusing to see Republicans and some Sanders “supporters” who both can’t bring themselves to vote for Clinton even though they know Trump is unacceptable. But they each refuse to do so because the each believe Clinton is someone who is completely contradictory to the other.

It is like how some view President Obama as both weak and feckless, yet simultaneously a despotic dictator.

Doublethink is really a thing I guess.
