I don’t understand the republican stratagy here. They appear to think that if they just hold out, they can force through Harris. But there is zero chance that the Democrats seat Harris in the US house, and they have every right (and 230 years of examples) to not seat him.

The republicans are acting like they think they can do their usual NC shitty anti-democratic stuff, but they don’t control the US House, and the new board (appointed Jan 31) will have a democratic majority, plus I might add the old board had republicans on it, and it would not certify either. It is like their minds can’t rap around the fact that they are NOT in control. I expect we will see a lot of this behavior after tomorrow when the Democrats take over. Lots of authoritarian republicans suddenly finding they can’t override facts or procedure and just get their way.

The last think I would want were i the republicans is this dragging out. Just get the special election done as quickly as possible.

Keep digging that hole, Mark Harris.

Yup. Can’t hide the crime, then get rid of the board that supposed to investigate it. Just like Trump wants to get rid of the FBI.

I’m guessing Mark Harris can’t see his reflection in a mirror…

“Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said last week that majority Democrats won’t allow Harris to take office…”

“But thanks for playing, Mr. Harris.”

Their strategy is to have a full election redo including the primary. They want Harris about as much as you wanna see your jailbird deadbeat cousin knocking on your front door. Only way to get Harris off the ticket is to have a new primary.

This is simple. Pelosi and Hoyer should just say “pick your poison, champs…either you do an appropriate investigation in NC or we’ll do one in the House.” Frankly, if there wasn’t so much else they have to investigate, I’d say they should do it anyway.

Yep - Unless you just want this district to NOT have any representation.

I find this interesting:

Also on Monday the current congressman, outgoing Republican Robert Pittenger, told the Charlotte Observer that he won’t be a candidate if a new GOP primary is called to settle the dispute. Pittenger narrowly lost the primary to Harris in May.

His response seems pretty definitive. Perhaps having several months (after losing the primary), of still living/working on The Hill, he has adjusted to the idea of not serving in Congress - and is looking forward to the Divorce from Trump and the GOP water-carrying disaster?

The (outgoing) Republican legislature passed that bill. The Democratic governor vetoed it, and they overided that veto (which they can’t do in the incoming legislature where the D’s picked up seats). But the bill they passed had no new board till January 31. Again, I don’t think their strategy has caught up with reality. The best strategy is to get it over with quickly, and if they loose a seat so be it. The ongoing narrative is really bad for republicans.

That or the increased interest could uncover that illegal machinations took place in his election as well.

They may figure that they will almost certainly lose the seat in a re-do so the longer they hold out the less a majority the Democrats will have.

@spin It could also be a “big fish in a small pond vs. small fish in a big pond” situation. In the past, they’ve been able to run roughshod over the Dems within the state, so they are operating under the delusion that they can do the same at the federal level. They just don’t understand that they aren’t dealing with Fredo once it goes to the national stage. The national Dems have more punch and can hold fast in ways that the local Dems haven’t been able to and the NC Republicans haven’t adjusted to that.

Can the US House investigate a state election process?

Sure Republicans want a chance to steal, er, “win” another election w/o Harris but what do Democrats want? Could a Dem dominant elections board simply declare Harris’ win invalid and certify the Dem runner up?

said if Republican Party Chairman Robin Hayes didn’t nominate candidates for the interim elections board, “one is compelled to conclude that you are withholding your nominations and encouraging people not to serve solely for the purpose of impeding and obstructing the Ninth Congressional District investigation.”

True, but since these are republican’s, no such concrete actions are needed for such a conclusion to be drawn.

I think this is exactly what is going on. I am just highlighting it, as I expect that we will see a lot of this in DC with Pelosi in charge. People like Mark Meadows are suddenly going to find they have less than zero pull, and it will be fun to watch them whimper about how no one except FOX NEWS is paying attention to them.
