Also, whatever happened to his defense of the ACA? Didn’t he express that Kav would overturn the ACA?

Manchin will need to go eventually when there is real hope for a Democrat other than him in WV. But until that time we have bigger fish to fry.

If this is what it takes for him to win re-election I’m ok with it. I’m sure he knew Collins was a yes, ensuring the nomination.
A much more important vote for Manchin is that of Senate Leader. Kavanaugh is in, and that likely increases Dem chances of taking the Senate (still a long-shot). We need Manchin in to vote for (shudder) Schumer. It’s a gutless call, but… politics.
I understand all the reasons to try and keep a Democrat in WV, but I can’t support Manchin’s vote. I have, at other times, respected his decisions but a vote for Kavanuagh is IMO immoral. Now Manchin’s trying to say Dr. Ford was mixed up about who assaulted her, etc. This is the level he (and all those voting for Kavanaugh) will be forced to sink to.
Shorter version: “I put my personal ambition over victims of sexual assault.”

I’m voting and urge everyone in the center or on the left to do so, but I’m haunted by the worry that Vlad’s thumb is gonna be on the scale.
Suppose Manchin is indeed a Republican in disguise. He will still add value for the Democrats by voting for Schumer as Senate leader and not for McConnell.
Let’s talk about how the GOP played this brilliantly by reducing the confirmation to he said she said politics. The dems walked right into it by pretending not to know in advance that the WH had the FBI in its pocket, not because of Trump but because Rosenstein and Wray are part of the boys’ club. Jesus, stupid. If they continue to try to “trust” the completely broken institutions, there will be only anger and enthusiasm on the left’s side. No victories that actually matter. This loss is huge.

Do not be shocked if Heitkamp turns. I more than expect her to. Because it’s one thing to fall on your sword if it does some good. It’s another thing entirely to do so if it’s an empty gesture. Which it is at this time.
