He votes with trumpp 60% of the time, unlike, for example, Gillibrand of NY who votes with trumpp 8.9% of the time.
I remember when W. Va. sent a Democrat named Rockefeller to the Senate. And repeated it several times. Capito, friend to Kav, replaced him.

If this is what it takes for him to win in WV then that’s okay by me, majorities in Congress are the most important prize right now. I do hope he gets challenged next time around, but it would be nice to have so many Democrats in the Senate some day that I wouldn’t feel the need to defend Manchin.

I used to loathe Manchin back in the days when our politics were a kind of sideshow. These days I see that he’s a kind of genius. He has the low cunning we need: leaving to one side the question of coal, which is an existential issue for any W Virginia pol (and will eventually be Manchin’s undoing, because coal is going rapidly down the tubes), he has somehow succeeded in never casting a decisive vote against his party and has always resisted the lure of joining the Republican party, when doing so would make his political career so much more straightforward. His trick is one that Dem voters should be aware of, since it works for Republicans: do lots of symbolic stuff to endear him to non-Dems, and then wherever possible deploy his power to further the D agenda. This Op-Ed is pure symbolic fluff that causes no harm to anything except to Republican party interests. Talk R but vote D in the crunch. Fine formula as far as I’m concerned.
