While I recognize his difficulties given WV’s current politics, Manchin had a 10-point lead before the vote; I think he could have risked it. Also a “no” vote would have been so helpful to the Donnelys, Testers, and Heitkamps. It would have sent them and their voters a signal that they are all in the same boat. That they are all willing to take a stand together for what is right, home-state politics be damned.
The great and sad irony is that the Kavanaugh Court will be devastating for the people of West Virginia, from corporatist rule, to black lung, mountaintop removal, and making even shittier their already shitty healthcare system…
getting people to vote against their own best self interests is an authoritarian core competence.

Manchin’s vote couldn’t stop Kavanaugh. But I bet McConnell loves the fact that putting Manchin in an impossible position may have tanked a blue takeover of the senate.
I can’t believe how badly Manchin seems to be handling the optics back home. His talk of “facts” sounds pretty tone-deaf.

It’s real hard to salvage honor from a fear based decision. Manchin is afraid of the Republicans. That was his fact based decision.
I’m pissed too but…vote him in, punish him in your state but keep him in office. Please.

West Virginia voters, please do not cut off your noses to spite your faces. Yes, Manchin did a bad thing by voting for Kavanaugh, but would a Republican taking that seat really be better? And not voting is the worst possible thing to do; you abdicate your right to make your voice heard. Hold your nose and vote, please.
I’ve just donated to Manchin. He has to win. It’s that simple. I don’t care if he votes 100% for the GOP, as long as he caucuses with Dems I’ll have his back for lack of a better alternative, this being West Virginia. If his Republican opponent takes his seat it would be totally disastrous.
