I actually do believe him. If he was that drunk he probably thought people would get the sarcasm or something. However as a longtime Baltimoron, no way there were a lot of Trump supporters in a Baltimore playhouse performing Fiddler.
More likely he’d been drinking heavily because he’d planned to show up and yell Heil Hitler, Heil Trump. The drinking almost certainly started out as a “shot of courage”. Because this had to have been planned.
This was in Baltimore soon after a tragic massacre at a synagogue. He must have bought his ticket in advance. Ergo, he knew he would be going to a dress performance of Fiddler later that evening when he decided to start drinking.
If he was drinking heavily just before the next portion of his planned evening, it was most likely because he felt the need to steady his nerves before diving into the next phase of his planned evening, which was to stand up in the middle of a dress performance of Fiddler and shout Heil Hitler, Heil Trump.
Too drunk to realize that Fiddler on the Roof is about the Russian pogroms, not Nazi genocide. Hitler was still a failing art student when Tevye was in the shtetl.
