Discussion for article #228593

And yet “misogyny and sexism don’t exist”.

This is precisely why women give out fake numbers. It’s sometimes safer to give out a fake one than to say no. Sometimes saying no as a women gets you dead.

“Detroit police arrested the man after he allegedly tried to flee the scene.” Do you really need to say ‘allegedly’ here? You could say that the ‘alleged shooter’ was apprehended, but I’m sure lots of people were fleeing the scene.

I guess simply calling her “bitch” wasn’t enough for this asshole.

So will Fox News report that getting shot is a compliment?

Well, I assume he’s a cop, then?

There are crazy people everywhere. Too many of them have guns.

I wonder if he realizes what an absolutely dumb move he made in killing someone over something so stupid.

How about evil?

I usually lump misogyny, sexism, racism, homophobia in with evil.

I’ve done that – given out a fake phone number because some jerk wouldn’t leave me alone otherwise. It still galled me to be put in a position of feeling I had to lie just to get a guy to stop bothering me.

The way I always saw it was this: If someone will not take no for an answer for something like a phone number or a date, there’s a very good chance they will also not take no for an answer when it comes to demands for sex.

I have a question for all the men who do violent acts because someone “disrespected” them. Who taught you that you deserve respect? Clearly the other person was correct in treating you the way you deserve to be treated.

Yet another example of “responsible” gun ownership! Go nra!

And just hope you never run into the creep again.

But the key here, according to the NRA, is that he did it ‘responsibly’.

Let me guess, alcohol involved? open carry excuses? standing his ground? afraid for his life because he was being a jerk?

Yes, you do have to say that. Under our judicial system, the accused is considered innocent until proven guilty (and how well that works is another story for another time.) But under the rules of responsible journalism, you do have to use “alleged” in situations like this. It’s also the legally responsible position to avoid the publication being sued for libel or slander.

Unfortunately, what with American attitudes about guns, women may to give out fake phone numbers as a protection. Galling? Yes, but better to be alive.

I’m sure he’s questioning the use of alleged in the context of fleeing the scene, not the shooting itself.
