Discussion: Man Breaks 19th-Century Statue While Climbing It To Take A Selfie

Relieved it’s not an American.

I thought the same thing.

We’re all thinking alike. Expecting it to be a stupid American because, well, Obama or something like that. It is why we can’t have nice things.

Same here. I’m very surprised that this is a Portuguese man.

Do Portuguese not drink? Do they not have ignorant people just like every other nationality? Nonetheless, also relieved.

Anyone who revels in taking selfies is behaving as a navel gazing jackass to begin with.

In case anyone’s curious…

Somewhat related to “art disasters” is the story that always makes me laugh when I see the result…although I am rightly horrified by it. ~snicker!~ It’s the tale of the old lady who wanted to restore a fresco of Christ in her local church:

Cecilia Gimenez, who is in her 80s, made headlines across the world after attempting a DIY restoration that left the 19th century fresco of Christ at her local church in Borja, Spain resembling … uhhh! Well, it’s often referred to now as “Jesus Ape” or “Chia Christ”!
The “Ecce Homo” was a depiction of Christ crowned with thorns painted by artist Elias Garcia Martinez 120 years ago. After suffering ridicule for weeks on the web, Gimenez (who said she wanted to save her city the cost to restore it) later sued for a part of the profits coming in when tourists put it on their list of “must see” items in the area and flocked to the town. Officials are now still pondering whether to restore it or leave it as a tourist attraction. Gimenez lost her court case.:

Obama did it, this proves that he is a Kenyan!?

At least it was a local and not one of us.

The number of idiots I saw with selfie-sticks in Sicily was ridiculous. Everybody is so busy looking at and taking pictures of themselves that they don’t have time to look at what ostensibly they came to see.

A legend, still recounted, grew up that he would one day reappear out of a mist and retake the throne.

That ghost is gonna be so pissed at this guy!

reappear out of a mist

If only…
What does it mean now that an admitted destroyer of public art is the looming Republican Presidential nominee?

It’s so effing typical…idiocy, sadly, isn’t confined to Spanish 80 year-olds…
I’d forgotten this story…the images posted still piss me off.

King Sebastian is well-known as a monarch who fell in battle in North Africa aged 24 and without heirs. A legend, still recounted, grew up that he would one day reappear out of a mist and retake the throne.

Sadly, King Sebastian’s life story has been more of a fairy tale of late. Specifically, Humpty Dumpty.

This may be the highest profile casualty of narcissistic selfie-taking since that unfortunate dolphin on that beach in Argentina.

Maybe the woman who did this famous restoration is available…

It really says a lot of who we are today as a people. Oblivious to decorum or to common courtesy, taking all manners of stupid risks…and all just for a photo that can be posted on-line for some “likes”.

I find this kind of behavior appalling, but then I remind myself, why am I posting on a comment thread? Sure, it’s to express my opinion. But a part of it is to see how many “likes” I can get, and to see which posts do well vs. those that don’t. It’s interesting from a sociological standpoint…and I’m not breaking anything.

Stupidity knows no national boundaries, it seems.
