Discussion for article #237036

How about a ‘Sit Your Ground’ defense-

Ha, ha!

Entirely predictable. How much longer before the GoFundme account?

Wait, I know it wasn’t specifically used in the trial, but wasn’t Stand Your Ground the excuse the police gave for not detaining or questioning Zimmerman in the immediate aftermath of the Trayvon Martin killing? It was a few weeks before public pressure grew to the point they had to consider even investigating the incident. Or maybe I’m misremembering.

what happens when 2 guys are just standing their ground? did the koch bro’s (and ALEC) or the nra give that any thought when they started drumming up this stupid law? instead of avoiding or de-escalating a situation, you have people thinking, hey, i can get away with shooting this asshole. all i have to do is say i was afraid for my life and just standing my ground. i walk.

“Stand your ground” is now actually baked into the Florida legal code (has been since it was passed into law) and one need not make it as an affirmative defense to have it get you off of murder charges.

You are remembering correctly. Stand your ground was a big part of this case. because the cops just patted him on the head and sent him on his way without charging him with anything.

When it came down to the trial, his lawyer decided for strategic reasons that they would have more flexibility with just a standard self-defense and did not use the stand your ground defense.

It’s a win-win for the gene pool. Just think of it as evolution in action.

This is great. Now we’ll waste the time and resources of our judicial system (including the citizens who will serve on the jury) to deal with the dispute between these two pieces of garbage.

Too bad he was an on duty cop.

Zimmerman should have to wear a GPS device to warn the populace when he’s in the vicinity so they can leave the area. Whenever he shows up violence and/or gunfire ensues.

No the reason was they knew that Martin was not shot and killed as he ran screaming for help, but was shot while he was in the process of pounding Zimmerman’s head into the ground. It wasn’t until the lie was spread, similar to “hands up don’t shoot”, that a politically motivated state prosecutor decided to present incomplete evidence I order to obtain a probable cause determination so Zimmerman could be arrested.

His acquittal was a no brainer once the facts were presented to an impartial jury.

That’s assuming that they’re capable of hitting their target without harming innocent bystanders. I’m not sure that’s a risk worth taking.
