Discussion: Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy: We've Got To Stop Government Shutdowns

Discussion for article #241144

You sir are a lying bastard. The Democrats did NOT want a government shutdown. That was the Republican idea to get rid of ObamaCare.

Would that have anything to do with the great big Nothingburger with Cheese you guys had to choke down last time?

In case anyone whines that I’m lying, here’s what the Teabaggers were demanding:

  1. Defund Obamacare
  2. Delay Obamacare
  3. Delay the individual mandate
  4. Deny coverage to the President
  5. Deny coverage to the Cabinet
  6. Deny Coverage to Congressional Staffers
  7. Deny birth control coverage
  8. Approve the keystone pipeline.
  9. Means-testing for Medicare
  10. Change Federal Employee Pensions
  11. Expand oil drilling.
  12. Block Net Neutrality
  13. Tort Reform
  14. Weaken the regulations for coal-fired power plants
  15. Tax code changes
  16. Thwart EPA coal-ash regulations
  17. Repeal medical device tax
  18. Change the rules on the debt ceiling

On ALL of this the GOP got nada, zip, nothing but they DID end up costing us something on the order of $29 billion and agreed to talk to the Democrats about the budget after refusing for half a year.

I’m not TOO surprised they want to dump the tactic. I like how they suddenly shifted to “Ok, fuck it. How about the Keystone pipleline? Can we have that?”

All you have to do is refuse to talk to them until the government is funded. That’s all it takes.

He started off well, then went into bubbleland with his blatantly false Reid/Schumer accusation.

He already knows how to like like a GOP House Speaker. But that talk of no more shutdowns won’t fly with the TeaHeads, since they think that is a great source of power for them.

Very JEB-like…

“No,” McCarthy said. “We’ve got to stop these. People look to Republicans, but we were doing our work. It was Schumer and Reid who said in the summer that they wanted to shut down government, that they devised the whole plan not to let the appropriation process pass.”

This is an out-and-out lie and portends badly on how the new Speaker will operate!

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss!

How will Republicans learn to stop shutting down the government, when Republicans just keep blaming the Democrats for it?

It’s like saying, “I’d stop driving drunk, but if only the other cars on the road stop getting me drunk and forcing me behind the wheel.”

Addicts always want to blame someone else for their problems. Addicts don’t recover until they stop blaming other people.

What they’re really addicted to is the belief that next time, people will believe them when they blame the shutdown on the Democrats.

Welp, there is is. The ritual pre-emptive disclaiming of any intention to shut the government down and blaming of Democrats for the shutdown they say won’t happen has now occurred. Everyone strap in and hold tight, because the Shutdown Express has left the station.

Lying sh*thead. Dems never wanted a shutdown because we know how Americans will get hurt in the process.

Nonetheless, Dems won’t be steamrolled by these parasites (well, not anymore…)

He woke up mid way through the recital of facts as he knows them and realized he was in Foxland so changed course.

Yawn. People yelling “shut it down” must be punched in the larynx after the shut down occurs and they attempt to pivot to blaming the other guys. This is not a suggestion.

This sounds like a good plan.

“We need to join together not just in our ideas but in a media plan. So those in America need to join with us. If we are to be successful, we need to be able to fight and win. Those are the ideas we need to bring.”

Yeah, from the double-speak and outright lying, I thought he was perfect Speaker material for a Republican controlled Congress.

We need to join together not just in our ideas but in a media plan.

Truer words were never said… they have no coherent ideas and they have no coherent communications plan. That’s what Republicans call governing, so what else to do than shut down government?

I would love to know how much just the shutdown threat has already cost us. Just in my agency I have 2.5 hours of meetings scheduled about it and I’m not a manager. Our management office has to have all the lists of who’s on and who’s out ready for the first, folks have to pre-write/approve all the emails, phone trees are being updated…

If you want to stop government shutdowns then try working with democrats instead of obstructing everything. Oh and start being truthful. Democrats did not cause ANY of the Gov’t shutdowns. The republicans did. The last one was over an attempt to get rid of the ACA by holding the debt ceiling hostage.
So the way forward Mr McCarthy is stop lying and start being truthful and learn to compromise and with with your loyal opposition. That way you can all act like adults. Ya gotta admit, sir, what you have been doing these last 6 years hasn’t worked all that well for the country and we who live in it. Continuing resolutions are not effective governance.
But I know you won’t listen to me.
