For the love of god - how many POC live in Maine? What is wrong with Maine?
Wake up folks, Steve King! Trump, many in current administration, the Attorney General, several Senators and Representatives in my oppinion are not that different.
Not only are they not that different, but Trump, King, Sessions, and too many other Repuglicans have given license to these white racist slugs like Kawczynski and many others to crawl out from under their rocks and start preaching their venom openly.
Well, as i see it, this guy and his kind are perfectly free to segregate themselves from the rest of our society. If we never see or hear from them again, that’s fine with me.
He`s also a Trumpy White Supremacist .
If this Nazi doesn’t get fired for publicly expressing those beliefs, NAACP should move its Maine headquarters to Jack(off)man.
Majority of the population in Maine are fairly progressive. Maine has a small but growing non-white population. But much of rural Maine is Trump Country, just like much of the rest of rural America.
Also note that this douche-bag is a carpetbagger from New Hampshire who moved too Maine a year ago. And it looks like he only revealed his deeply racist beliefs recently (or they were only uncovered recently). The Selectmen who hired him only just learned of his white separatist comments from reporters and are apparently dismayed.
He himself says he expects to be out of a job shortly. I expect he’s right.
I love the part at the end where he whines that the press has “destroyed” him (by simply publicizing the views he proudly shared in a public forum) and begs the media to let him “leave with some dignity.”
The hope that the real story here will end up being that even in deep-red rural Maine, this kind of shit ain’t gonna fly.
Me too. And that still does not address the core question - how many African Americans live in Maine? I’m thinking not many so I fail utterly to understand what the White Supremacists are doing there in the first place.
Maine has large immigrant populations of Somali and Sudanese. Young people have been leaving since the 1980’s, which places Maine with an older white population.

I see now - thank you. That makes a lot more sense to me.
Only Vermont is whiter. Here are the whitest states in descending order of whiteness.
.
Vermont 95.4%
Maine 94.8%
West Virginia 93.7%
New Hampshire 93.4%
Iowa 90.9%
North Dakota 90.2%
Montana 88.3%
Kentucky 88.1%
That’s about what I thought for New England.
It makes sense to me now in light of the aging white population of Maine - they are looking for someone to blame for things not going so well there since the youth are leaving.
Poor Iowa, Steve King really isn’t very good at his job.
The same thing that’s wrong with the rest of America. I live in Florida and the commenters on TPM have no hesitancy to condemn it as Floriduh and an aberration. I love it here and my sister that loves it in Maine. It’s not this state or that state or your state or my state. America doren’t work like that. Nut bags abound all over this joint. You will not change them or eliminate them. You work around and marginalize them. No point in converting them to your or my version of America. Leave them from your thoughts and plod on to make this place a good place for you without looking back at assholes like this dude. He dosn’t care about you which licenses you to return the favor.
I live in Texas - ask me how much I agree with this sentiment. I was just curious how a mostly white state could be so full of White Supremacists.
I know, it’s weird, right. But it’s the same in many states and rural parts of states that have very small minority communities. Think rural Idaho, with very few minorities but a strong organized white supremacist presence. A small part of it is douchebags like this guy that choose to move to locations that are overwhelmingly white, specifically because they’re overwhelmingly white. The larger part, I think, is that it’s the very people who have little to no direct contact with minorities that fear them the most.
In one way, that makes sense. If you have little to no direct experience with a group of people, you’re much more susceptible to stereotyping them, believing propaganda about them, fearing them as a group. This has been very well documented with immigrants – the people who have the least experience with immigrants in their community are the most opposed to immigration.
It turns out that when you meet different kinds of people and interact with them, more often than not you tend to learn that they’re not the monsters and deviants you were lead to believe they were.
I know it’s like this but it’s a bit difficult for me since I live in a state which is almost an Hispanic majority and has a large African American population so the jackass racists here have at least something to base it on as far as that goes.
But I’ll say this and please don’t take offense, but since we in the south were integrated by court order, we have become far more integrated socially than the rest of the country in much of the south. Not all of it, but a whole hell of a lot of it.
I think New England and the east coast in general suffer because they have never been ordered to integrate. I can’t recall now if the riots in Boston were due to court ordered integration or the city’s own program to integrate.
I suggest that this creature self-deport.
I lived in Texas…and I liked it there. Food was awesome! I’ll bet this is a conventional wisdom thing. I’m not sure there’s as many “white supremacists” as blogs suggest but I do believe we have more than enough assholes.I lived in Waco and I don’t remember any racists or supremacists from my time there. I’m sure they were there. Maine too. I think it has more to do with how vile they are given a false association or congruence with how many there are. In any case…they are nothing close to a majority and there’s no reason to listen to them. Dismiss them and move on.
