Regarding the killing of 3 Israeli youths “by Hamas”:
Oops.
Actually, one may consider that some extremist Zionists believe these young men were collateral damage in the goal of a “greater Israel”. The deaths of these young men were just another reason to “mow” the Palestinian “lawn”.
Shelling a hospital is not “degrading Hamas”. It is a war crime plain and simple. Then the Israelis cynically blame it on “friendly fire” of a Hamas rocket. Yes, truth is the 1st casualty of war.
Whatever “moral high ground” Israel occupied was relinquished long ago. They are behaving exactly like the thugs who have persecuted their people over the decades.
I’m old enough to remember the partition of Palestine. It was a current events topic in school. British Field Marshall Montgomery said the Palestinians and Jews would be fighting for 50 years.
He was an optimist.
“The anticipation of harm is worse than actual harm”? Tell that to the newly created orphans and recently childless parents in Gaza. I’m sure that they’ll take some comfort in knowing that the threat of injury is “worse” than actual death and maiming.
There have been approximately 34 deaths from these “fearful” rocket attacks, since 2000. Almost 300 Israelis die in traffic accidents, each year. Do Israelis fear driving in automobiles?
Let’s try to have a sense of perspective, here. I know that the those who seek a “greater Israel” will always find pretext for the continued occupation, subjugation, theft of land, murder, starvation and torture of Palestinians. End the occupation, recognize the right of an independent Palestinian nation to exist, leave the settlements, return stolen land and the rocket fire will “magically” stop.
However, in the Israeli calculus, the status quo is preferable. Peace, shmease.
This crap in the “Holy Land” has been going on since the forties because a screwy group of paranoids are recreating the savagery and conquests of the Old Testament. There’s no solution to this in the foreseeable future because those people aren’t going to give up their religious fantasies.
You might be surprised to know that, Noah Pollak, the neoconservative director of the Emergency Committee for Israel, agrees with you about getting rid of US military aid for Israel. Probably for different reasons - 1) he would like to remove any leverage that a liberal President has and 2) Israel doesn’t need it. Only about 20 percent of Israel’s military budget comes from US military aid.
If Hamas quit shooting rockets, this would be over.
If Israel quit bombing … Hamas would still be shooting rockets.
You can twist this around as much as you like, but that’s the reason these people continue to die.
Hamas has 0 interest in ending this.
How can they turn the Palestinian people they are supposed to be protecting into the ‘martyrs’ they need if they don’t keep antagonizing Israel?
I noticed that too. I’m assuming an editor elided that little detail, as I can’t imagine a journalist who’d neglect to report the identity of the people who were preventing he/she from doing his/her job. I guess I’ve just become inured to the bias that surrounds this conflict.
