Discussion: Magic Johnson: Clippers Owner's Racist Comments Are 'Black Eye' For NBA

Discussion for article #222035

I hope others follow Magic’s lead and the stands remain empty. Would be great to see. Hopefully even those with season tickets won’t show.

But of course, racism no longer exists in America, 'cause the GOP says so.

As this latest depressing incident lands on top of the Bundy mess, right-wingers try to salvage their militia heroes with the “it isn’t about race, it’s about government tyranny!” line.

Consider the following hypothetical case, which would closely match the legal issues in the Bundy case.

A town in the Southwest – let’s say for the sake of argument a heavily hispanic/black town – decides to siphon water from a federal dam to avoid paying its water bills. The courts tell them to stop and to remove the illegal water lines. They refuse, insisting that its “the people’s water” and it’s tyranny for government to tell them not to use it. Federal officers are sent to remove the illegal taps, but the town is soon swarmed by heavily-armed Black Panthers, who threaten the officers and force them to withdraw.

Would Fox and the wingnut right still hail these people as patriot heroes for resisting federal land and resource ownership? Because the “cause” would be exactly the same. Or is it maybe about race after all?

I’d love to be a fly on the wall of the Clippers locker room. I agree with Magic Johnson’s comment!

Yeah, the owner is racist no doubt but Magic Johnson should be the last one to act as the moral authority for the NBA. Here’s a married man having orgies with porn stars, gets the AIDS virus, lies about it till he has to admit to it, a man and player many considered at one time, the icon, along with Larry Bird, as to what the NBA was all about. Magic did enormous damage himself to the image of the black athlete.

Edit for TomBlue (getting around the three posts thing):

Thanks Tom, didn’t know you cared. And you’re right, I was just stirring the pot, the neo-liberal faux outrage pot. Nothing else going on you know, all Bundy all the time. Borrrring. An old racist coot getting all that attention. Meanwhile. housing, which has played a significant role in every economic recovery, has just taken a major hit this week. Not one thread here about it and very little mention of Obama in Japan trying to keep them in the TPP group. But I know it’s all about Bundy this week, and watching the 'pubs doing a 90 mph walk back. Yes it was amusing - but the TPP - that’s downright scary. But we love our 1st black president and I’m sure he’s got our best interest at heart. And the other guys don’t. That’s all I need to know.

BTW, was a gym rat for a good number of years and was starting guard on my high school basketball team for two years. Yeah, we weren’t much good but I do know the game. Watched all the greats from college on. Saw the evolution of the game from the early '60’s. Remember well going from the burbs to the inner-city to play the all black all-city teams. That’s when my NBA dreams were crushed by reality. BTW, do you know the only player to average a triple double in one season?

What a punny comment.

Only your first five words are pertinent to this post.

And why is that? Doesn’t hypocrisy make you feel uncomfortable?

I wish this had happened to Jordan. After all, he famously defended his lack of activism by saying “Republicans buy (Nike) shoes, too”.

Blacks who change their socio-economic status within their lifetime can succumb readily to the “I’m above the masses” disease as well as anybody else. Including Magic.

This week, Magic had a wake-up call.

The person who most needs a “wake-up” call is Clarence Thomas, who is insulated from black social reality. But he will, before his life is over, go down as the black man most damaging to African Americans in United States history.

If I may, what does Magic Johnson’s personal decisions have to do with this topic?

Only a perfect being can so easily judge others. The odds of you being that being are probably less than the odds that you could ever fill Magic Johnson’s shoes. Magic is a great dude, always has been, you are just a guy hating on him anonymously-you lose.
What possible good could it do you to spread rumors and speculation? Or are you saying you were right there in the orgy?

No! That is absolutely the wrong thing to do. Magic should show up at EVERY Clippers’ game and sit on the front row with Sterling’s girlfriend. And the fans should all agree to sit black-white-black-white throughout the stadium. Show Sterling the NEW America!!

He can do that at the Laker’s games and not have to contribute a penny to this racists coffers.

I don’t think there is any question of what is right and who is wrong. Donald Sterling is dead wrong and Magic just spoke up for what’s right. This isn’t a duel between two men, this is the ugly old issue of racism just popping back up from it’s hiding place.

He probably wears a size 14/15 so no I couldn’t fill Magic’s shoes. And LeftFlank, please do a bit of reading on Magic’s lifestyle I referenced. All true. No speculation, no rumors. You’re just another neo-liberal feigning outrage.

Including the POTUS.

@Darcy,
I’m willing to bet that you are not an NBA fan and in fact you don’t know shit about professional basketball. Much less, you know nothing about Magic’s career both on and off the court. In fact, Magic is a much beloved star and a well respected businessman in Los Angeles, where he spent his entire professional career. He has been a visible spokesman for HIV/AIDS causes as well as other charities, a well loved ambassador of the NBA, and every kid in Southern California, black, white, whatever, who grew up watching him play respects and admires Magic Johnson.

Once again, you really don’t know what you are talking about. But of course, not surprising at all. I think you are just trying to stir up some shit out of boredom. I haven’t seen you much on the Bundy threads, defending your kind of hero.

By his own admission that is Darcy/Clarence’s intent. The best thing to do is just ignore him.

Donald Sterling has been an execrable character around Los Angeles ever since he brought the pathetic Clippers to Los Angeles from San Diego a few decades ago. Everybody loathes him, even his team. He’s ruined the careers of so many of his players, and his real estate atrocities have been a scourge and an eyesore along Wilshire for decades.

This kind of racism by Donald Sterling is completely in character for him, and I’d bet that the controversy doesn’t bother him a bit. The Clippers are just a plaything for him and have always been a losing enterprise. He doesn’t care if he loses money, so boycotting the Clips isn’t going to hurt him much at all.

I enjoy poking at Darcy. He’s not your everyday troll. Surprisingly, on his meds he actually has a sense of humor, and once in a while – very seldom but occasionally – comes up with an opinion that surprises in it’s lack of stupidity. In fact, he made a very good point once. Unbelievable, I know, but I can attest it as fact.

EDIT: Apparently I am on probation and have reached the limits of my ability to respond. I’d just say to @Lio yes, it’s true. If you catch him on a good day, squint in just the right way and hold his comment sideways to the light, he may or may not accidentally make a decent point.
