Discussion for article #231937
If Kamala Harris runs for the Senate she has my vote. If she runs for Governor instead (which honestly, I’d prefer), she gets my vote.
I say this about no other politician: She’s great.
She needs to work on her debate skills. I listened to her debate with Steve Cooley in 2010 she was not impressive. Hopefully she is better now.
The Republican field is not considered as strong as the Democratic side but names mentioned include former Republican gubernatorial nominee Neel Kashkari and Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin (R).
Mayor Swearengin? Talk about your nominative determinism. If only Sheldon Whitehouse would run for (and be elected) president.
Villaraigosa will be in prison on corruption charges eventually, so I’d prefer it not be him.
Ready for Kamala!
My pick was Newsom, but I just realized that as Lt Gov he will probably run for Gov instead of Senator. Duh.
Harris seems pretty clearly to be the best choice at this point for sure. And no Republican will even come close.
Yeah, it’s obvious that Newsom is going to run for Governor.
I’m liking Kamala Harris’s prospects.
But the most entertaining thing about any Senate election in CA is: Which self-important Teabagger billionaire is going to try and buy the seat this time? Is Meg Witless going to give in to hubris and try for the Senate? Or maybe the “Burned Out Ex-Celebrity” route? Ping Kelsey Grammer?
Cooley was kind of a joke. Hopefully, another bozo such as Kneel Cashncarry will try it this time.
Tom Steyer’s got a whole hell of a lot of money and a record of bankrolling environmental causes, which makes him attractive to many traditional progressive groups.
But at the same time, Kamala Harris has a pretty good record fighting for the environment as state AG, and she is better known…and she used to date ol’ Willie Brown, the original Slick Willie – and the two of them are still said to be on good terms.
Money is one thing, but connections and endorsements are another.
The one upside to Villaraigosa would be watching MSNBC’s election night coverage. In 2004 (When V. was elected Mayor of L.A.), Chris Mathews spent the entire evening tiptoeing around having to pronounce “Villaraigosa.”
I don’t know the guy, but I have an issue of someone being a frontrunner candidate just because $$$$, whether D or R. I guess that’s more of an issue with the big money sewer that our election system has become.
If it’s Harris, I’m all in. My only hope is, because of the unique top-two primary system here in CA that the Ds don’t end up splintering the vote 10 different ways.
So far, having multiple D’s running for Constitutional office in California hasn’t resulted in the nightmare scenario that some people have feared – although, we got kinda close in June with the State Controller’s race, where 2 dems and 2 republicans split the vote almost evenly, 24-21-21-21.
I know…I know, She looks like a very strong candidate, but I wince at her unfortunate last name.
Umm what’s wrong with Harris? This is truly a new one for me.
Florida…2000 Election…Katherine Harris.
From the Wiki page:
“After several recounts were inconclusive and the laws governing recounts were unclear Harris halted the recounting process and certified that the Republican candidate, then-Texas Governor George W. Bush, had defeated the Democratic candidate, then-Vice President Al Gore, in the popular vote of Florida and thus certified the Republican slate of electors. Thus allowing Bush to win the election. Her ruling was upheld in the state circuit court, but was subsequently overturned on appeal by the Florida Supreme Court.
But the Florida Supreme Court decision was reversed by the U.S. Supreme Court in Bush v. Gore. In a per curiam decision, by a 7-2 vote, the Court in Bush v. Gore held that the Florida Supreme Court’s method for recounting ballots was a violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. By a 5–4 vote, the US Supreme Court held that no alternative method for a recount could be established within the time limits set by the State of Florida.
The decision allowed Harris’s previous certification of Bush as the winner of Florida’s electoral votes to stand. Florida’s 25 electoral votes gave Bush, the Republican candidate, 271 electoral votes, defeating Gore, who ended up with 266 electoral votes (with one D.C. elector abstaining).
Harris later wrote Center of the Storm, her own memoir of the 2000 election controversy.”
I don’t think anyone in California will make that connection in any way that would hurt Kamala. It’s a long time and a long way from Florida 2000.
We know our Harrises in California. No worries
Ain’t no big deal. I can assure you no one in California will mistake Kamala Harris for Katharine Harris. It aint’ gonna happen. Only the dye-hard pols will even remember who Katharine Harris is/was.
