Discussion: Louisiana GOPer Wants To Nix Funding For NFL's Saints After Players Protest

Well, I have to admit it’s a surprise, all this. I did not expect it would suddenly become a wingnut politician thing to attack the area’s football team.

So, free education, lunch, housing, and healthcare (all things you’ve most likely spent your career desperately trying to eliminate, by the way) means racial injustice doesn’t exist? Oh, I see what he did there. Basically, he’s saying, “We give you ungrateful niggers all this free stuff, and you’re still not happy. Bunch of ingrates!”

The newspaper cited a 2015 Forbes report that found that Saints owner Tom Benson would receive some $392 million in state subsidies through the lease expiration date in 2025. Those funds were projected to come from a combination of rental payments, tax breaks and increased revenue from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, where the Saints play.

Let’s see, if Baton Rouge were to withhold payments, then I think Benson would be in his right to break that lease. Were that to happen, Benson could move to Oakland, San Diego, St. Louis, San Antonio (if I’m missing a city…)

I am all for removing government subsidies to all professional sports teams. Although in the case of Louisiana the only thing that keeps the saints in the state are the subsidies.

No kidding. The only thing that would make this more ridiculous is if he were waving a confederate flag while he said it.

Worse than you can imagine, actually. Has to do with Nazi death camps, which is why I won’t use the term, myself.

I was actually thinking about fact checking how he voted on those issues, but some reporter (or three) is probably doing it now.

I think I would enjoy seeing this guy call any member of the Saints “boy” to their face. Not that this would ever happen, of course.

:joy:

Right? Let alone have everybody weighing in on it. But you might know the thing that would get the most attention would have to do with professional sports.

Isn’t that a contradiction in terms - professional sports?

Nevermind me, I’m female. I’m not hypnotized by it all.

Benson can move the club out of the state.

Yeah, probably Louisville. We’ve already got the Fleur de Lis all over everything. Would be a natural fit.

Yeah, take all that cash away and give it to “Duck Dynasty”. They bring in soooooo much more income into the state of Louisiana. Right, Gohmert Jr.?
But I guess, if the Saints decide to leave, you can always fill that football stadium with NRA gun shows and Ted Nugent concerts. That’ll bring in at least $189.

he’s probably never attended a CCC meeting… unless he’s visiting Trent Lott in Mississippi.

“A Republican Louisiana lawmaker on Monday proposed cutting millions in state tax dollars and subsidies for the New Orleans Saints and the NFL after some of the team’s players refused to stand for the national anthem…”

This would be the first time in history that a Republican’s actually opposed corporate welfare.

Because they wanted the fucking team there, trollsky. DUH!
Hey, if every state in the union wants to stop giving tax breaks to professional sports teams, that’s fine with my ass. Let the Republican billionaires look under their couch cushions for change and pay to build their stadiums. And then we can eliminate all the tax breaks to corporations, because it would be unfair and possibly unconstitutional to single out just sports franchises. And then we can bring corporate tax rates up to near 70% like they were during the 50s, the greatest period of economic growth in US and world history.
Hey, Brissy! I think you may be on to something!
