Discussion for article #243584
Obviously Trump hasn’t gone too far with his base, but I’m wondering if the Republican base has finally gone too far for the rest of the public. I have to say, I’m feeling a little pride at how many have stood up for the Muslims in our country. It’s a real start.
Agreed. I also think that Hillary’s focus has rightly begun to shift slightly, in an effort to bring in Republicans who can no longer stand their own candidates.
While I’m at it… besides Reagan, Republicans don’t generally like their presidents. Maybe Gerald Ford was an exception, but they never bring him up in any significant way. But Nixon is persona non grata, Bush 41 was voted out after raising taxes (which helped Clinton’s economy), and Bush 43 was a spendthrift. That leaves Reagan, but as someone here said I think, in today’s GOP, Reagan would sound like Voltaire.
But some slurs are so heinous that they must be answered. And some lies are so vile that they become dangerous if not met with truth, and strength.
I hope the Freep’s example will give other media sources the courage to repeat its very accurate assessment and righteous criticism of today’s republican party.
We have to stop the garbage, hatred and bigotry and show the world that these people do NOT represent America’s ideals.
I’m so ashamed of these people.
And I just made the mistake of reading comments. Thick-headed, ignorant numbskulls abound. Oy.
MUsLIMs literally TERRORIZed POLACks in Hamtramck by making them MOVE to CreatE SHARIa Michigan town. The “FREE” press has Probably BEEN infiltrated by radical Islamic terrorists.
Last night, Rachel Maddow pointed out how the rest of the GOP crowd was just barely better than Trump and largely saying the same things as him even now they’re “outraged” by his statements.
I remember reading somewhere in the last day or two (I think at Vox) that 8% of Republicans name President Obama as the male politician they most admire, with only 3% going for George W. Bush. I believe Obama had more than any other active or recently retired politician.
I am quite taken with Rachel’s prescient theory also shared by O’Donnell it seems, that Donnie is planning to self destruct by the use of overheated rhetoric and also by threatening a third party run and maybe actually seeing it through and the Rs know well what a third party run would mean. Maybe he’ll just keep spewing and create so much animosity that he wins no primaries. It’s plain to see that he doesn’t want to do the hard work of the presidency, just wants to shout about how badly this president has done.
Obama is the president anyone should and can admire. We know his improbable story and to know he put together a career that led to the White House will never stop being an inspiration and slightly mind boggling. On the other hand GWB was a legacy president, and it was the bush hubris that led John Ellis to think he’d continue the legacy.
If you use Chrome, I find the extension Shut Up is useful for people like me who can’t help but look at the comments.
Never, never read comment threads. I stopped a long time ago because of what you’ve both evidently run into yourselves. They’re vile, ugly, but also anonymous and invisible so it works for them.
Absolutely he does not want the hard work.(Unless, of course, he thinks he can delegate the presidency – which he just might, the arrogant jerk.)
In the meantime, it’s pure reality TV. He’s loving it. He’s never had such a huge audience – he’s gone worldwide this time. He’s sucking the oxygen and life blood out of everyone and he’s high, higher, highest on it. He’s Yertle the Turtle and king of the (slop) pond. (On top of everything else, he’s got Secret Service dudes running around him, what’s THAT doing for his ego??)
The question is: How will the show end and when? When does he show us all his middle finger, call us all losers and exit stage left?
Rachel’s theory fits nicely with the Drump-as-Clinton-troll theory that has been gathering increasing notice on the internet. Even Jebya felt comfortably desperate enough to mention it publicly yesterday. And Roger Stone is still in Drump’s orbit, if not officially on the payroll.
However, how does Drump tangibly benefit from his effort? I’m with Mr. Jones on this: There’s something happening here, and I don’t what it is!
Would that many more US newspapers reprint this editorial and avow its message!
And look at the publicity this guy has gotten - unless he’s personally killed someone, there is no such thing as bad publicity.
He is basking in it. His supporters are craven, misguided souls who think the entire world is out to take them or kill them. Trump’s little world is extremely happy right now.
And the rest of us… not so much.
I think he benefited by getting press. It benefited his business interests and his television show. I don’t think for a second he thought it would go anywhere. It just got out of control and the more hateful he is, the more he expects the electorate to finally turn on him. It’s not happening and now he’s in a bit of a box. I don’t think he wanted to drop out at the top of the polls, he assumed he’d milk this for a bit and go away. It’s how he handles everything. This isn’t the first time he floated running and no one cared back then. Surprise.
At last, an MSM organ puts on its big boy undies and squarely faces the full reality of what’s happened. Granted, it’s an MSM organ in a city with a strong minority presence and a large Arab-American community, but I’ll take it.
Republicans aren’t going to face up to it, of course. None of them. Not the “moderate” Republicans or the Country Club Republicans or the ones who purport to abhor Trump for any other reason. Nor, indeed, will they even vote against him if he gets the nomination. They’re going to be like the guy on “On Point” who called in to say he’s a Republican, though he’s getting fed up with this whole idea of partisanship, why can’t we all just get together and do the right thing? But darn it, he doesn’t like Trump, but some of these things Trump is talking about need to be dealt with and acknowledged. I live in a small town where nothing happens, but everything I see or hear [on Fox News, which is all I watch] tells me it’s a big scary world gone mad.
Don’t be so sure that such an act wouldn’t have an inspirational effect. At this point, they’re all thirsty for blood.
Here’s the difference between that and the “Trump as crazy Democratic plant” nonsense:
- The “Trump as Dem plant” theory requires Donald Trump to knowingly burn his international demographic (for his licensing) and make a lateral move in his domestic demographic, only to pull his mask off at the end and say “Ha! Fooled you suckers!” and thereby burn even the new demo he got. Few people are going to really condone the shit he did under the “IT’S JUST A PRANK, BRO” defense. That’s a lot of revenue loss for something he could have just wrote a check for, and all to orchestrate someone else’s win.
- The Maddow theory says that Trump got into this purely for his ego – and billionaires -will- burn money for ego – and suggests he’s rational enough to realize that he could never do the job of president. While he loves being a candidate and loves being in a position to authoritatively criticize, direct, and control people, he does not want to be President because it will have much less executive power to do what he wants to do than he is used to.
I still don’t buy it, I think he believes his own press, but the latter theory is much more convincing than the former.
But just like the responses after the shootings in San Bernadino last week, everyone will offer their thoughts and prayers to the victim, but all will be absolved of any further involvement.
