It may be Quixotic, but it’s a far stronger statement if party leadership is forced to confront rebellion. It’s absolutely viable to take that path, just not as easy.
One of the oft-stated goals of the alt-right is to purge the GOP of what they call RINOs – anyone not 100% committed to what they believe is Spanky’s goal – instating the white ethnostate and joining an alliance with Russia to re-instate patriarchy and save the “white race”. Short term as people leave they make a statement but longer term, if committed Nazis take their place and ramp up the propaganda, will that be a win?
Cool to see some Trump voters questioning their choice, but will that last once all dissenting voices are purged and the party machine uses its enormous resources to create social pressure through propaganda?

This just repeated earlier reporting I saw where the headline said Gagin left the party but the story and his tweets only said he left the chair position.
Yeah, I’m not sure the Republican party can be fixed. Just like ICE, its own internal corruption, ideology of cruelty, and strong power structures leave no room for reform. Better to destroy it and start over with something else. If the GOP collapsed there would be a new party alignment within an election cycle or two.

Yes, much like the Nazis destroyed Röhm’s SA and replaced it with Himmler’s SS. The Republican Party as we once knew it was pretty much destroyed by Nixon’s Southern Strategy. It’s just taken this long to reach its logical conclusion (a party made up almost entirely of white supremacists). I would be very wary of whatever replaces it.

Yes! This is the path I’d recommend, even for members of the administration. Speak honestly and loudly until you’re fired. And then go on a speaking tour. Basically, a coup. He can’t fire everyone and maybe he’ll just resign.

If leaving the Party means the Party officials wake up and do something, I’m with you. If leaving the Party means that there are no dissenting voices (because everyone’s buggered off) when it’s time to put together the next platform, then I’m more sceptical.
These folks are not joining the Dems, they are becoming independents. Who will still be more likely to vote for a Gooper than a Dem, regardless of how godawful the platform or the party ultimately become. The PR statement of leaving the party is good, the problem is that unless those who leave really organize a new party, the Goopers will still be able to count on them in the end. This public message gives them short-term cover, but I am less optimistic that it leads to longer term effects.
So, change? Mebbe.

Yes, cowardly and convenient. The future looks dim, opportunity presents itself, party leader sees it, wraps himself in the flag of honor and duty, then bails. Transparent and expected. Expecting more is asking too much IMO. They always leave a mess.

But Trump has never so flamboyantly and publicly supported Putin, while negating US intelligence – in the presence of Putin, no less.
This wasn’t a political rally or a late-night tweet, it was an international press conference.

It may be part of “pay more attention to what they do than what they say”. Now with Trump he has been very consistent with this topic, other things not so much.
