Discussion: LISTEN: Journalist Livid At Uber Exec Who Suggested Smearing Her

Discussion for article #230289

I thought “oppo” was the hot new thing in the wake of the elections…now you’re telling me that it’s a gun, and can be pointed in TWO directions, both AWAY from you and AT you too??

The hell you say!

This will be incredibly helpful to Uber’s competitors, since it’s pretty much a given that criminal enterprises aren’t allowed to operate taxi and taxi-like services.

Oh, wait. I forgot about the law not applying when the Disruptive! card is played.

I’m just waiting for the libertarians who think we should have the freedom to be robbed and raped by unregulated hired drivers.

Uber = rape. They rape the legitimate taxi industry. They rape those who oppose them. It’s their business plan.

Don’t forget how they screw their own drivers too. They keep dropping the amount they pay drivers.

Why does such a great product have to be run by the biggest assholes?

When did bloggers become journalists? Do I now qualify as a journalist because I report on TPMs reporting by sharing links to articles (which is more or less what TPM does), copy edit the articles, and comment on the message boards?

I think my trolling should qualify me as an Internet Interpretive Argumentation Professional.

It’s not the Disruptive! card that is used, it’s the Sharing! card. As if paying for someone to drive you somewhere is a new “sharing” thing.

At least that’s the way it’s put here in San Francisco whenever these issues come up.

The Uber exec is an ass, but Uber itself is pretty cool. Especially in LA, I find it extremely easy to use and affordable. I have NEVER had a bad experience, over at least 20 rides.

David Plouffe always was a class act. Not.

“We live in a world where Donald Sterling had to sell an NBA team because of comments he made,” she said. “This is a company which entails personal safety in getting in the cars. How does this guy not lose his job?”

Excellent point. Lets face it, while Sterlings remarks were reprehensible, he wasn’t actively trying to destroy someone and their family because he doesn’t like their reporting on the Clippers.

I honestly don’t see how Uber can keep him on, despite his apologies. Even if you accepted the apologies as sincere, the company is now on the hook if anything ever does happen to her or her family. Want to guess who the first suspect would be? He is a huge liability for them right now.

What was interesting about the so-called “apology” was: his defense seemed to be that it was an “off the record” and “private” conversation. Yeah, that makes it better. Seriously?

“Ethical behavior is doing the right thing when no one else is watching- even when doing the wrong thing is legal.” Well, now we know exactly how unethical Mr. Michael and Uber are.

Can someone fill me in on why Uber is so bad? I used it for the first time last month when I needed to get to the airport at 5 am. They came on time, the driver was nice, and took the route I asked for. Why are they considered to be such a bad thing?

Let’s see: Uber drivers have attacked and assaulted passengers; they’ve refused to service to gays; they charged several hundred dollars to go a few miles in San Francisco (in one case, it Was $357 for a 14 mile trip); Uber says most drivers make over $50K (which has been proven demonstrably false)… the list goes on and on. Uber’s response has been that they are not liable or responsible if their drivers act negligently or criminally – because their drivers are not “employees” but “contractors.” Nice.

All I can say to you us: caveat emptor and I hope you don’t lose an eye if an Uber driver attacks you with a hammer.

What does Uber do? Who are they?
