Every advancement in communication has been a boon to hucksters, expanding their audience while putting distance between them and those they fleeced. Law enforcement is rarely interested in ripoffs, if nobody is getting physically harmed, and civil cases are non-starters until a lot of money is involved and then only if the perpetrators have not been careful about putting their assets out of legal reach.

The powerful Ways and Means Committee writes tax law, signs off on trade deals, and oversees Social Security and Medicare. Mr. Neal, an institutionally minded western Massachusetts Democrat, wants to make serious policy pushes in almost all of those areas.
Mr. Neal also would have at his disposal an obscure provision in the federal tax code that allows the leaders of Congress’s tax-writing committees to request and investigate the tax returns of any American, including the president.
Not an expert here, but I think the Executive branch writes the tax code to comply, as best it can, with legislation on tax matters. The window for changes in legislation is probably closing too soon, but I wonder if Trumpp could delay compliance with a request long enough to keep his returns under wraps until the 2020 election is over or until the matter reaches the captive SCOTUS.
I’m confident that the new Democratic House is going to have the upper hand in dealing with trump, whatever path they have to take to get there.

Trump knows he will lose any Congressional investigation led by Democrats, so he will shamelessly stonewall, obfuscate, and, in the end, refuse to comply. Meanwhile, he will excoriate his tormentors on Twitter.
