Discussion: Liberal Blogger Hired To Defend Redskins Name Quits After Two Weeks

Discussion for article #224780

This just confirms everything Iā€™ve ever said or thought about Ben Tribbett (I hadnā€™t heard heā€™d taken the job until I read this article. Iā€™m not sure how I missed the story.). Why, oh why, do people give him the time of day?

Soā€¦This young man is a liberal? If thatā€™s the case then in a relative sense, I must beā€¦what???..Vladimir Ulianov? AKA Lenin.

Being a retired ecologist, Iā€™ve got a better idea. Why not just name the team after a tasteful horticultural variety, such as ā€œThe Blue Dicksā€, ā€œThe Dicksā€: or, perhaps, a nice little aerial avian avuncularly: the ā€œWashington Tufted Titmiceā€; ā€œThe Titsā€, for short. Now isnā€™t that much better? Save everyone a lot of trouble. Glad to be of service.

Didnā€™t he think this through at all? Iā€™ve never heard of him before today, but now I know his name and will forever identify him as a propagandist-for-hire.

I understand the fanā€™s desire to keep the name unchanged. But that doesnā€™t change my opinion that it should be changed.

The name is a racist name and anyone who thinks differently is either a racist or an idiot - period.

Looks like a boycott is the only way that itā€™s going to happen.

Because Ben Tribbett actually knows his shit when it comes to local and state VA politics. His blog (deleted after he took the Redskins job) was a useful resource for people and political junkies who live in Virginia. His decision to become a Redskins shill was extremely ill-advised however, and Iā€™m glad heā€™s stepped down. Hopefully he puts his blog back up.

Just amending this to say that I think the Redskins need to change their name, but Dan Snyder is an idiot so he will stretch this out as long as he can.

If the NFL or the Redskins were a government or public entity the name would have to be changed. But they are businesses and theyā€™ve calculated the loss from changing to be greater than the loss from keeping. Itā€™s part of 'merica people.

How does a stupid team name become a ā€œtraditionā€ fer chrissake? If they had changed it 30 years ago like they should have, it would now be a vaguely remembered piece of sports trivia. Why does sports ā€œtraditionā€ trump everything else? These guys (and they are almost all guys) are acting like spoiled fifteen year olds, but then so much of our politics seems to be determined by spoiled fifteen year old boys these days.

Anyone who thinks the name redskins is not an offensive slur, I invite you to view a selection of Hollywood westerns made before around 1960. If anyone can find a use of the word as a ā€œterm of honorā€ I would be very interested to hear about it.

Time for another Bloggerā€™s Ethics Panel (h/t Atrios)

Let them keep the name and change the mascot to a red-skinned potato. They play like a bunch of couch potatoes much of the time and I doubt the tuber lobby would get too upset.

Excellent!

Shorter Tribbett: ā€œMan this kitchen is hot, Iā€™m outta here!ā€

Honestly this is a dumb argument for the left to have. Living in and dealing directly with several Native American Tribes at the Administrative level they not only do not have an issue with the name they take pride in the team name.

There are far greater things the left can be fighting for right now that will help win the house and increase their hold on the senate in November this is one that can be one that causes damage.

Washington Redskins: ā€œDonā€™t be offended! Some of my best friends are Liberal!ā€

This was the guy behind the George Allen ā€˜maccacaā€™ brouhaha. He also made some unfortunate tweets about native AMericans a few years back:
