Discussion: Leon Wieseltier Apologies For Past ‘Offenses’ Against Female Colleagues

Just another Trumped up groper…

I wish I could say I am surprised.

Can we just move on from all this stuff. It’s wrong, I know, but damn it, I don’t think caging clicks from every semi-famous lecherous old man’s admission of fault is advancing the American agenda.

A most annoying guy. TNR has been a magnet for assholes (with a few notable exceptions) for a long time.

During the Clinton administration The New Republic was known as the inflight magazine of Air Force One. They’ve gone through too many editorial changes since that time.

@ronbyers I couldn’t agree with you more. It’s a distraction at best, and a disservice at heart to people who want something more.

It’s pretty clear that stopping the hellacious working lives of women is not on your agenda.

I am glad to see all this. It is way past time for this discussion.

I’m retired now, but I worked as a scientist and I can tell you that harassment was a way of life, in ways both subtle and blatant. This crap cuts across all of society. And it’s not getting better. My 26-year old son has been shocked by all the #metoo stories he has been seeing from his contemporaries.

No the working lives of all women are on my agenda. No one, man or woman should face sexual harassment in the workplace. The law should be seriously enforced everywhere. What I am sick of is media outlets turning every semi-famous old man’s admission of guilt into click bait.

Famous, semi-famous, or unknown, they all should be the subjects of public humiliation. What better way than turning creeps into clickbait?

So sorry you’re tired of it. Some of us are glad to see so many people getting their just rewards.

I can sympathize with Ron’s impatience but women need to have their due. We fought against this crap for 40-50 years only to have it popping up with a vengeance for the last decade or so. It REALLY pisses me off. NO. It’s not okay to touch without permission. NO. No amount of power or money makes you entitled. NO NO NO. What is this so fking HARD??? If every women (or man) that has been under the thumb of a person wants to post ‘Me, too’ then have at it.

I’m not sure what type of science you did, but in my institution (the research arm of a hospital in the midwest), we have 50% women. Of the leadership team, 50% are women. I hired more women than men. 3 years ago, some kind of incident occurred in which some boundary was crossed. The boundary crosser was gone immediately - that same day. The exact nature of the incident is not to this day well-known, but it is clear that there is zero tolerance for any sexual boundary violations. Medicine, biology, statistics, some other areas are now 50% women, and there is no tolerance for this stuff. If it happens, it is reported.

Good grief, we sure don’t want to waste time giving voice to the oppressed, not when we have the AMERICAN AGENDA to promote!

The only thing that is going to stop this kind of crap is a sure and certain knowledge that if you try something, it will come out, and when it does, it will ruin your life and career.

That’s the thing. Most men are lecherous. I certainly am. The difference is that some use power and control to harass and rape, and others do not. I have never done anything in the workplace that I have to worry about. So, when this comes out about these pigs, I have no sympathy for them. If you want sex with someone, either do it in a good way or hire a pro. Don’t destroy the life and career of some woman or man who has no power and is your subordinate.

I think these revelations and corresponding acceptances (or not) of responsibility are important and necessary steps toward isolating Trump in his own personal locker room.

Maybe it’s something you don’t want to hear about, or maybe you think the whole subject is overemphasized. OK, then skip over it. For many though, it’s a lifelong chore evading the grasp and lechery of those who have power over you, or who feel they have the right to ogle and embarrass or even grab or violate, knowing society accepts it and even blames the victim.

The more it’s brought up, the more women will feel it’s OK to come out and condemn harassers and rapists. Women all know how bad it is; some men do, but more men are discovering what a constant burden and obstacle to success it is to women. It is not trivial to the victims.

I think the $300,000,000 sweet heart contract Zinke has given his crony to rebuild the PR power grid is far more important. Who the hell is Leon Wieseltier anyway? Quick don’t look it up.

How about an apology for the haircut? The 70s are over, Leon. Long over.

His name translates as “Lion Weasel-creature.”
