Discussion: Leftist López Obrador Takes Reins In Mexico Vowing To Help Poor

This guy is as dumb and ignorant as Trump, and although he is not personally greedy, he has a messianic delusions. It’s going to be fun couple years, as he is not going to take Trump’s abuse quietly.

That is a pretty high bar to reach. The question is, will he pay for a wall?

He seemed to be a pretty effective mayor of CDMX in the early 2000s so I doubt he is really as dumb and ignorant as Trump. Anyway, it was about time Mexico had a leftist president. The level of income and wealth inequality in Mexico is obscene, and hopefully he will do something about it.
I know quite a few upper-middle class people from Mexico, and for the last year or so they were all dreading the possibility of Obrador being elected. They all think Mexico will turn into another Venezuela. I thought they were just scared because they knew that the corruption and extremely cheap labor that allowed them to prosper might come to an end. I hope they are wrong and I am right.

Zapata, Villa, Juarez, Mexico has seen this before. Hope this one isn’t a disappointment as the others.

This guy might talk a good game, but power corrupts as everyone knows. All the high and mighty promises to help the little guy sounds too much like an orange doofus we all know who said GM plants wouldn’t close, jobs were coming back from overseas and health care (insurance) would be cheap and available to everyone.

I was a little surprised at this:

“The country is completely divided,” said Valeria Moy, director of the Mexico, Como Vamos? think tank.Moy said she had expected a more conciliatory tone from the president

When you win the presidency and a legislative majority by campaigning against corruption, why would you start off conciliatory?

Mexico is burdened by unhealthy income and wealth inequality and rampant corruption, so they elected a leftist reformer.

The U.S. is burdened by unhealthy income and wealth inequality and rampant corruption, so we elected a super-rich sociopath who is utterly corrupt himself and surrounds himself with liars and criminals.

As far as how Lopez Obrador will perform, we’ll have to wait and see - but at this point Americans are not really in much of a position to criticize the choice made by Mexican voters.

Lopez Obrador’s supporters may be placing too much faith in his ability to help the poor, but it’s not crazy to think he’ll at least try.

Whereas in this country we have millions of Trumpers who believe – contrary to any evidence or logic – that Donald Trump truly cares about the plight of the poor (at least if they’re the right color). That’s a level of political naivete – or perhaps delusion would be a better word – that would be hard to match.

He received a spiritual cleansing by indigenous leaders as part of the festivities, then closed out the gathering with a folksy 90-minute speech to the thousands of jubilant fans jamming the Zocalo

Somewhere in the Universe, Fidel Castro is sitting around with a bunch of old dead guys saying “90 minutes? I once got reelected and made a crowd of thousands remain standing in the Plaza de la Revolucion for 7 hours and 30 minutes…”
