There’s an easy way to cut down on crime by law enforcement officials: Require that they be incarcerated in the facilities that they managed, or among the prisoners they sent away.

Interestingly enough, this is exactly the defense that Hermann Goering offered at the Nuremberg trials: All the atrocities of the Nazi state – death camps, slave labor, Nacht und Nebel disappearances – were all entirely legal under the laws of the Third Reich. The response was to put the jurists who established these laws on trial for crimes against humanity.

If a day care fed children ‘not for human consumption’ or spoiled anything the workers and owners would be looking at long sentences for endangerment, neglect and theft. But Alabama allows its sheriffs to do this? Way to throw your name back in the hat for worst state Alabama, you were starting to pass Mississippi, but you’re pulling ahead!

Sorry, but I stopped trusting everyone involved in local law enforecement years ago. It’s a nice thought, and in a just world would be the norm, but their actions as a group demonstrate that would be foolish.
Extreme caution is about the best I can manage these days.
