Discussion: Law, Corporate Work, Politics? What's Next For James Comey

I won’t spend too much time speculating about this. Instead, I’ll worry about regular dads who will lose their jobs in the near future. If the GOP is able to implement any more of its agenda, there won’t be unemployment, food stamps, or other support to help them feed their families.

The next Democratic President should appoint Comey as a special prosecutor of the Trump heirs in perpetuity.

Can we please stop with the hero worship of Jim Comey? He’s got a gigantic ego even without our assistance.

Undercover agent going after the Russian Mafia’s casino money laundering for the Russians is my guess.

I don’t see how the question is making him out as a hero. I’m not into Scientology either but I still like Tom Cruise movies.

He looks a whole lot older than 56.

I’m curious what you mean by “gigantic ego”? Just because he speaks well and comports himself with propriety? Trump has a gigantic ego, but Comey? What makes you say that? I’m truly curious.

At first I was sucked in by Comey’s performance on Thursday. It was great political theater to cast Comey, the FBI, and Congress in the best possible light. Serious people doing serious work. Putin would’ve been proud of the job they did. Comey was damaged as was the FBI for being partisan. He managed to recast both as honorable and duty bound. He drew a case for obstruction along with a case of not obstructing. Congress can go either way if Trump suddenly becomes a liability to the party. He never said anything else other than Trump was a liar. Everyone already knew that. Even the most ardent Trump fan knows deep down that he lies like a rug. They may not admit out loud, but they are aware of Trump’s mendacity.

Instead of going down in history as the partisan FBI director who threw the election to Trump, he’s managed to grow a halo after that hearing while burnishing the FBI’s image as well.
Comey was Deputy Attorney General under Bush and appointed Special Counsel Fitzpatrick to investigate the Plame ordeal. He knew the nature of the position and its limitations. He knew that Mueller would be under Rosenstein’s thumb and in fact, under Trump’s also. It was great political theater though, I’ll give him that. Yeah, I know, I’m not very optimistic. From Wikipedia:

Comey appointed Patrick Fitzgerald to be the Special Counsel to head the grand jury investigation into the Plame affair after Attorney General John Ashcroft recused himself.
In 2005, as Deputy Attorney General, Comey endorsed a memorandum approving the use of 13 enhanced interrogation techniques, including waterboarding[42] and sleep deprivation for up to 180 hours, for use by the CIA when interrogating suspects

Democrats have been worrying about these dads forever and passing legislation to help them get to the prosperity this country experienced in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Eisenhower called it Progressism and LBJ called it a War on Poverty.

But after St. Reagan started screwing around with their prejudices and fears, these progressives forgot that they were actually born liberals and began voting for these Top 1% millionaires like W and Trump and their corrupt Republican Congresses.

Until they understand that income inequality is the result of conservative Republican policies and are not an answer to it, a great many of them will still vote Republican against their own best economic interest.

Democrats need to start running unapologetic liberal candidates who are not afraid to discuss why entitlements must be regarded as safeguards and investments in our democracy not something unholy or cheating small businessmen. Bernie actually got them to the trough in 2016 but Trump stole the water right out from under him by adopting Sanders’ agenda as his own.

Voters are again ripe to hear the truth after only six months of Trump. Capitalism must include some socialism as well as fiscal responsibility in a democracy where the Top 1% deliberately stacks the deck against the working woman and man.

Tip O’Neill would be spinning in his grave if could see how impotent his party has become when it comes to fighting for anything.

actually, it was Reagan’s wholehearted embrace of the scam that is supply-side economics that destroyed the nation’s prosperity.

During the 50s and 60s and 70s, US tax policy and economic policy was geared toward the middle class. It made the middle class gorw, and everyone—rich, middle class and poor—did better under that system.

As soon a Reaganomics took hold—a hold it still has on the GOP—the middle class began to shrink and the rich got obscenely richer while the poor got even poorer.

Trickle-down economics is a proven failure—yet the Republican party keeps a death grip on it and continues to believe—quite falsely—that it’s good for America. This illustrates clearly how ignorant conservatives are about economic policy and its effect on society.

There is still that faction of people who truly believe that they, too, can get rich beyond our wildest dreams. They are the ones who keep holding out for that winning ticket and refuse to think in terms of helping to make things possible for more realistic aspirations for themselves and others.

I was sure I’d win the Powerball until I realized it involved buying a ticket and depending on dumb luck.

Well trickle-down economics was good for their America. Sure they’re ignorant but they had the answer they wanted and with Reagan leading the way, it was just a matter of backing into an explanation. And like you say, ‘during the 50s and 60s and 70s’, the GDP pie itself got bigger, resulting in the middle-class’s piece also growing bigger. Then it all changed and the donor class decided to no longer share in the abundance. And today they kinda want the whole pie to themselves.

With regard to HRC, there was established precedent and policy as to how to proceed which he disregarded in pursuit of appearing apolitical. He assumed it wouldn’t cause any harm because she would be elected. He thought he could arbitrarily waive procedure because he knew best.

The cure for Trump is a legion of people whose names we don’t know obeying the rules - and documenting their encounters when need be.

No one seems to want to speculate, so I will. I think he’ll end up as an ethics advisor of some sort – either corporate or teaching legal ethics at university. That’s where his heart is – parsing the nuances of integrity and expounding on that.

You’re right about that. I don’t think he’d be all that happy in a law firm or a corporate environment.

I hope what’s next is some “splainin” … like that whole Email mess that his story of still does not make sense. Add to that the new references to the airport and the “matter” matter and why that scared him enough to hand the election to Rump.

Who’s lyin’ ?? Give me a fucking break … as we have watched Rump lyin’ for two years now. I wonder if we can figure out who is lyin’ ?? The “media” should be their best non-political heads on it. Hah !!!

What’s Next For James Comey?

I recommend the role of Herman Munster in a remake of The Munsters. Herman was played so endearingly by Fred Gwynne in the original series.

Let’s see what Comey can do with it.
