Discussion for article #244071
Whatās the surprise? More to follow, soon to be replaced by Foxbots, war mongerers, Israeli lovers and others of similar ilk.
The others wish they could afford to follow him.
Q: What were the 'Vegas odds on this?
A: House always wins.
Never argue with someone who buys ink by the barrel.
Surprise? Not at all. When all these right winger Oligarchs buy up the US Media companies the 1st to go is the Chief Editor and then the entire editorial staff.
Look at the WSJ after Rupert the fascist racist acquired that business journalā¦he promised not to āclean houseā and low and behold he cleaned house and installed his right wing disciples. There was a day when the WSJ Editorial page could be relied on for objective and level opinions on things like tax policy and Presidential Candidates - those days are long gone. The WSJ is now a right wing propaganda machine.
It will be interesting to see if the people of Las vegas stop buying and reading the Review-Journalā¦if they are smart, they boycott Sheldonās new mouth piece.
I live in Vegas, and over this past summer I was in front of the City Council twice during the public discussion phase of a proposed ordinance. Let me tell you, the entire council is nothing but what your mind imagines when it thinks of a bus load of typical Fauxian viewers: incurious, allergic to facts, incapable of deep thought, and 100% sold out to the dollar and the local billionaire casino owners, who they revere as gods.
Assuming it really was voluntaryāa big āifāāI donāt blame Hengel. I wouldnāt want to work for the guy who said this either:
āI am not Israeli, the uniform that I wore in the military unfortunately was not an Israeli uniform, it was an American uniform, although my wife was in the IDF, and one of my daughters was in the IDF, and my two little boys ā our two little boys one of whom will be bar mitzvahed tomorrow⦠hopefully heāll come back [to Israel], his hobby is shooting and heāll come back and be a sniper for the IDF⦠All we care about is being good Zionists, being good citizens of Israel, because even though I am not Israeli born, Israel is in my heart,ā¦ā
Sheldon Adelson is every bit as loathesome and malign as Rupert Murdoch⦠the only essential difference is that Rupert has a many decades-long head start on assembling a rightwing sycophantic media empire.
āAdelson Editorial Promises āFair, Unbiased And Accurateā Newspaperā
Joke of the day I see, especially the word āFAIRā.
Exactly as others have reacted. Why is this a surprise? Paper is secretly purchased by a right-wing billionaire in order to spew propaganda (do you really need to spew right wing propaganda in Utah, by the way). Of course there will be a purge.
Wow. That“s some world-class fucked-up aspiration for one“s child.
The WSJ Editorial page has always been extremely right wing my entire life. Rest of the paper used to be very reliable for actual news on business, but not the editorial page.
How can a ābuyoutā be voluntary? They offered Hengel enough money and he took it? Rather than get sacked?
Especially since he has already violated that pledge by secretly buying the paper hoping to use the paperās existing public credit to his own advantage.
I live in the Valley, but not the city proper. As such, I donāt investigate city candidates as closely as, say, those running for the Clark County Commission. But as best I remember, candidates for city council run as no-party-declared - and, of course, politicians frame issues in ways they hope will attract voters to their causes, so one can often only know what they want one to hear.
Since I believe the Vegas Valley is not ready to swing right-wing by a long shot, how do we explain those people being elected? And how do we change it another time?
āFair, Unbiased and Accurateā.
Having heard them all speak at length, and gotten at least half of the council to respond to me directly, I can only say how surprised I was personally to hear how prudish and anal they all were. The fact that they govern a place like Vegas just made no sense to me whatsoever, but there it is. The whole money/casino/corruption thing are side issues that any pol will face. But not every pol has to be so white bread anal.
Unfortunately, itās because those with the most to lose at the hands of right-wing governanceāminorities, young adults, single women, single parentsāare exactly those segments of the voting population who are least likely to vote.
I know the newspaper business is not what it once was, but this may be an opportunity for someone with good cash flow to start a new newspaper in Vegas. Unless thereās a restrictive covenant, there are some good people out there for the plucking.
