Discussion: Lankford: U.S. Doesn’t Hold Children Accountable For Actions Of Their Parents

Yeah and just like training a puppy they have to be rewarded for good behavior of they won’t do it. If they get acknowledged when they do the right things maybe they would learn finally.

They’re getting bitched at plenty for trying to do the wrong shit and they found out how very much they don’t like being yelled at when people started turning up to yell about the ACA.

We have to keep showing up.r And writing and faxing and telling them what the right thing to do is.

It’s a lot easier when you have 48 Democratic votes in the Senate for legislation that isn’t loaded up with poison pills.

Plus Trump is already berating them and backing their opponents (at least Flake’s, not sure about Heller), so to some extent the damage is already done.

In attacking them, and McCain, Murkowski, Collins and others – even McConnell – Trump has pretty much guaranteed that most of his agenda will go nowhere in the Senate. He’ll probably fail to get much more than the bare minimum to keep the government going. Maybe, if he’s wildly lucky and stays out of the way, he’ll get some tax cuts he can tout as a win.

Sometimes it makes sense to burn a bridge, but almost never before you cross it yourself, which is what Trump is doing by attacking Senators in his own party before they’ve even had a chance to vote on much of his legislative agenda.

Once again, it seems that Trump’s real estate, tax dodging and bankruptcy skills don’t seem to translate to the job of being President. Who could possibly have guessed?

Actually (correct me if I’m wrong), The Republican Senate passed immigration reform and the House did not. And not because it was voted down - it was because Boehner refused to bring it to the floor for a vote.

I suspect this is more horse trading than an actual stand. Come out against the thing that is optically safe to come out against, then make a deal for something you really want when invited to discuss stuff with the Orange One.

I hope that you and Plucky have it right and that I’m just a worrywart.

You are not wrong to worry. We’re talking about Republicans, so you’re never wrong to worry that they may cave and do the wrong thing, even when it’s bad for them as well.

Lets see how many can withstand the onslaught of abuse coming from Breitbart and the likes of Limbaugh and Ingraham. There is a reason Obama had to make an Executive Order, because Congress didn’t even want to hold a vote on DACA. And that was a issue that republicans had more reason that just Obama to oppose, their base is violently opposed to “Amnesty”, I see it in the office which is pretty diverse and we all get along, but the white people (In GA that translates as GOP voters) really hate the “dreamers”.

Yeah that was then. They didn’t want to vote on it because: Obama (black dude, not going to work with him.)

Now they have their own president and they don’t like him at all and they know they can’t trust him because he attacks at random. He’s going to piss them off by forcing this issue.

“U.S. Doesn’t Hold Children Accountable For Actions Of Their Parents”

Has he met Trump’s America?

“However, we as Americans do not hold children legally accountable for the actions of their parents.”

Lankford went on to say, “Unless the children have brown skin and speak Spanish, in which case we’ll deport them so fast your head will spin.”

More broadly, America has less social mobility than most 1st world countries now. If you want to have the American dream you have to move to Canada. Making sure that the children of poor people stay poor and face much greater prospects of dying young, being incarcerated and having children also trapped in that world has been the job of Republicans for many decades now.

I’m sorry to contradict you but I don’t think that’s true. Immigrants come here and move upward all the time. Otherwise they wouldn’t come here from other 1st world countries but they do. And I’ve been told directly by people in Europe that they don’t understand why we have gotten to the point where we can’t see the American Dream anymore because they can.

So without more evidence to support that I just don’t accept it.

Not at all.

I think we should make an exception for the Trump kids.

Never fear - they are all guilty all on their own.

It is currently true that the majority of additions to the illegal residents in the U.S. are coming in on valid visas and over staying, but the existing illegal immigrant population of 11 million has mostly been here for many years (upwards of 3/4 have been here more than 10 years now) and the majority of that population is (so far) still illegal border crossers, though that will flip in several years.

The whole illegal immigration issue is largely a solved problem. The illegal immigrant population in the U.S. has been stable now for a decade (down slightly in fact) and the number of illegal immigrants from Mexico has actually declined, a couple of million choosing to return on their own.

The birthrate in Mexico recently fell below the replacement rate, and the economy has boomed (as was hoped would happen under NAFTA) so the demographic engine of immigration from Mexico has been permanently shut down.

Trump’s wall has the easiest job in the world, stopping the hordes of people who aren’t coming.
