I’m SURE this is just another misunderstanding and/or ‘out to get them’ mistake for the Trump/Kushner family. It’s not like they are KNOWN for being nasty grifters or anything.

For penalties to work, they have to make wrong-doing less appealing than the right thing. If the likelihood of getting caught approaches 100%, then a modest penalty like this is appropriate.

Since the actual likelihood of getting caught is more like 1%, the punishment needs to leave a real mark. Something along the lines of 19 apartments being converted into condos, owned by the 19 tenants about whom the company lied. With low and hard caps on condo fees.

So-- why don’t people ever go to jail for this kind of crime? It messes up tenants’ lives, and there ought to be hell to pay. If you went to jail for criminal clerical errors, there’d be fewer clerical errors.
