Discussion: Krugman Says 'Who Cares What Centrists Think': Obama's Had 'A Seriously Good Year'

Discussion for article #223974

So the laissez-faire capitalist is using Argentina to mock Paul – what a nincompoop.

The only thing Podhoretz and the other negative, nattering nimrods can point to are Obama’s bad poll numbers and so-called scandals that continue to permeate the right wing echo chamber.

Taking into account the obstruction of the GOP, what PBO has accomplished is significant and should be acknowledged as a success.

Some context on Norman Podhorhetz taken from a neo-con friendly Amazon introduction to a biography that leaves me wondering:

“…the Jewish-American intellectual Norman Podhoretz, longtime editor of the influential magazine Commentary… both an editor and a writer…spearheaded the countercultural revolution of the 1960s and - after he “broke ranks” - the neoconservative response. For years he defined what was at stake in the struggle against communism; recently he has nerved America for a new struggle against jihadist Islam; always he has given substance to debates over the function of religion, ethics, and the arts in our society. The turning point of his life occurred, at the age of forty near a farmhouse in upstate New York, in a mystic clarification. It compelled him to “unlearn” much that he had earlier been taught to value, and it also made him enemies. Revealing the private as well as the public man, Thomas L. Jeffers chronicles a heroically coherent life.”

Affordable health care is here, GM is still around, OBL isn’t, and the Augean stables of the Beltway are still getting cleaned.

(Edit: I conflated Augean and Sisyphean … but then with all the Teahadis living IN the Capitol now, keeping them clean can be considered a futile task).

Add to that list: Tea partyers’ clocks in November … until the cons can dump in them again lol

As a centrist, I have no problem with the President. If you believe it’s his job to personally solve every problem in the world, including the Yankees starting pitching when Tanaka isn’t on the mound, then you might be unhappy, but so far, the ideas proposed by those who bash Obama range from non-existent to lousy.

You are my idea of a reasonable thinking person.

I was sooo happy that Krugman finally said it! The utterly nonsensical narrative, full of GOP wishful thinking, that Obama was ‘winding down,’ after being totally feckless, struggling, caught unaware, blah blah blah, while obscuring Obama’s real accomplishments (which are pretty amazing on the whole!) has found a willing partner in the mainstream media, including the NYT that Krugman writes for.

I guess the media, like the GOP, believes it creates reality. Delusional to the point of psychosis, both of them.

Good for him. Personally I’ve never cared what the “Centrists” thought. If you can’t be bothered to educate yourself on the issues and formulate an opinion, but instead choose to let others set out their positions, then stake out a spot in the middle, why should anyone take you seriously? All you find in the middle of the road is dead skunks, possums and armadillos.

Oh brother. So typically Teabagger. You have no clue about a. statistical significance (or in words you might understand, a “blip”) and b. the fact that the cold and snowy winter for a large section of the eastern US put a serious clamp down on the economy. Hint: check job growth in the private sector now. Of course we know you won’t because Teabaggers can never admit to being wrong. Ever.

Great post! I am as disgusted with the far left and their constant, GOP-like, never-ending complaints about Obama that are so often drenched in some combination of stupidity, white privilege, and/or irrationality. “Why can’t he get more stuff done like FDR or LBJ?”, they ask and without ever taking two seconds to compare the make of up of the Congresses those presidents had to the miserable one Obama has/had. They ignore whatever action he takes, be it on climate change or the new LGBT EO he’s signing in the coming days. Despite Obama signing an EO to do so, they whine that he didn’t close Gitmo while praising some of the very people that stood in his way (looking at you, Bernie Sanders). They ignore the fact that after 100 years of trying and failing, he’s the first president to finally get something done on healthcare. Nope, it’s better to bitch about the good and lament the perfect.

That’s why I’m thrilled to have a bona fide lefty give the president some much deserved kudos. The near breathless pile on from the right, far left, and the Beltway Bufoons isn’t just hurting Obama, it’s hurting the country. The economy isn’t great, but it has vastly improved. The more the media sells this “we’re all gonna die” narrative, the less confidence people have in the country and the economy. The sort of endless sniping at the president is helping to fuel the very people who’d like nothing more than to impeach him. If there is one thing positive I can say about Republicans, it’s that they would never, ever treat their president the way the far left has treated this one.

I first noticed this pattern a couple of weeks ago: Obama’s leftist critics have settled on a strategy of walking it back that is remarkably similar to how Scott Rasmussen reports polling data in Presidential races.

Rasmussen uses the same old trick in every election: he spends most of the campaign reporting bogus numbers that favor the Republican, and then a few weeks before Election Day, he suddenly discovers new trends that aren’t actually new trends, but rather his own new acknowledgement of factors that have been there all along, and reports that the Democrat is really surging and looks like he’s going to pull it out at the end, when in reality, the race has been stable and it’s only Rasmussen’s reporting that has changed.

Same thing here: now, suddenly, people are discovering that the ACA gives people health care, the EPA is issuing regulations that address climate change, and the banking system has been saved and subjected to some rational regulation. What a great 2014 he’s having!

Except that all of these things have been going on since 2009.

In DC, “centrism” is defined as a Democrat willing to criticize Democrats on teevee while a panel of old white people who’ve failed at everything they’ve ever done, sit around and nod.
