Discussion: Know Thine Enemy: Understanding ISIL And Its Origins

Discussion for article #228764

All that we have to do is to send two mujahedeen to the furthest point east to raise a piece of cloth on which is written al Qaeda, in order to make generals race there to cause America to suffer human, economic and political losses without their achieving anything of note other than some benefits for their private corporations” - Osama Bin Laden

Same as it ever was.

AQ and ISIL are completely different? The author needs to go back and check both the history and the analysis. ISIL was AQI and AQI was always in complete in tune with AQ doctrine. There are lots of historical errors in this article that come from a superficial understanding the history, strategy and objectives of AQ. The Bin Laden quote above is a better example of the similarities between groups – at least it’s sourced. One galling example in particular is that the definition of Kharajites is confused with Takfiris. Abu Mussab Zarqawi was never a Kharajite. No Jihadi wants to be called a Kharajite… the Kharajites were a 7th century Islamic cult and its an insult against them that Alawite Syrian Gov dredged up to describe ISIL. Also it asserts that AQ is full of oldsters and ISIL are the hip technologically savvy but brutal the young kids? Really? Two words: 9-11. Go back, reread, rethink, reanalyze and resubmit.
