He’s toast. Chris Murphy is calling for his resignation.
While i think two or more have discussed Trump’s allegations, i think that they wouldn’t have a problem with doing it again…
Now having said that, folks like Cornyn, Cruz, McConnell and other Republican senators need to get put on the record about Trump’s allegations also.
On the press.
They need to get asked that
Agreed
You do realize that
A) Minnesota has a governor’s race in '18.
And
B) The Franken allegations are seeping into that race
Right?
These calls for Franken’s head are politically safe enough and even tactically make some sense — much of the Dem base is energized by issues of fairness and personal power abuse (the Rep base is not of course) – but strategically, in terms of gaining political power in pursuit of major progressive goals, calls like this against a colleague make no sense: Historically this kind of self-immolation does not result in a gain of wide political power in the United States and it is that kind of power that the Dems, and progressives generally, must gain by 2018/2020 or risk being completely overwhelmed by the rising tide of authoritarianism.
NB: Mueller’s investigation will almost certainly come to nothing more than convictions of relative small fry with Trump remaining in power no matter what Mueller finds if the Reps retain control of either or both houses of congress. What the past year has painfully revealed is the surprising weakness of democratic institutions and the Republican contempt for rule of law. Only great gains in political power can counteract that, nothing less.
tl;dr/ gaining the moral ‘high ground’ has historically not been a winning electoral strategy in the US and, in the current milieu, there is no need for Dems to seek it anyway because their Rep opponents have no moral standing at all, particularly on the topic of sex abuse. Sacrificing a notable progressive champion to that cause is not likely to gain any converts; it could even lose a few.
I seriously cannot stand the fact the Dems are throwing away Franken just because it’s the expedient thing to do. The Democratic Senators are complete hypocrites when it comes to these allegations.
Bob Menendez was charged with federal crimes in 2015 which is far worse than groping allegations. Where were all of the Dem Senators demanding his resignation as soon as the allegations came out? They were nowhere because Chris Christie would have appointed a Republican to replace him.
And guess what? Bob Menendez was acquitted thanks to a mistrial.
So it’s okay to tell someone to resign if it’s merely allegations, there’s no investigation, and they come from a state with a Dem Governor? But it’s not okay to tell someone to resign if they are indicted, had a lengthy investigation against them, and they’re from a state with a Rep Governor?
And you watch…the Dems will lose this seat to an R.
Chickeshit panty wads.
But they won’t, you know that.
Dems have now set an extremely low standard to call for the resignation of Democrat member of Congress. Republican operatives will be beating the bushes looking for any women who feel that a Dem has acted inappropriately. They will of course call on Dems to force the accused to resign. We will then have a double standard where only Dems are forced out.
This shows that educated middle class white women may now be the most influential demographic in the Democratic Party. They have earned that position. But with it should come a heightened responsibility and awareness for how they use that power.
Then they get dragged
“Logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.” (Mr. Spok). At the moment, there is more at stake than the hurt feelings of a handful of individuals. In case you hadn’t notice, the future of this nation is balancing on the edge of a knife. Short of rigor mortis, Al Franken should stay exactly where he is.
Methinks we know the answer to that one.
WRITE TO THE WOMEN. They are jumping the shark on this one.
Ask em anyway
“Doing the right thing” would be announcing that he intends to allow the Senate Ethics committee investigation to proceed while he continues to fight against Comcast’s efforts to destroy the taxpayer-created Internet for their own personal gain…
Seven of them???
I vote for Democrats because the Democrats are (usually) better than the Republicans. Do you believe Moore’s accusers and not Franken’s?
Except for that, dear Democrats, Franken has been an excellent senator.
Except for that, Mrs. Lincoln, it was an excellent play.
Franken has been an excellent senator. It will be a great disappointment to loose him. But I refuse to hold myself and my party to lower standards than I hold Republicans. If I lived in Minnesota, I would not want to explain to my daughter wanting to keep Franken on.
I live in Minnesota. I would explain to my daughter that Franken has called for the Senate Ethics committee to investigate and that he is entitled to due process…
I’m starting to suspect Franken’s “stay tuned for an announcement tomorrow” gambit was to buy a little time for Franken to reach out to colleagues and let them know that he’s going to resign tomorrow, in part so that they can “get ahead of the story,” call for his resignation today, get their talking points straight, etc.
