This is what Rove and company tried to do in 2004 when he made the election about gay marriage. It’s no coincidence that this is all coming up again in an election year. The GOP leadership may, and I know this is a reach, but they may be smart enough to know they cannot win this election on the economy, on unemployment, or on an unpopular POTUS, or on any “issue” for that matter. So, they need to hijack it and make an issue of a non-issue. I guess their thinking is “it worked once…”
