One more time America…you don’t need your military to win over the world. Just cut McDonalds and “the big bang theory” loose and you’ll have it quick. Lots of folks ( desperate for criticism ) are yakking about how Cuba doesn’t have to make a single concession in this deal. Bullshit. They made the biggest one of all…they let the American’s in. It’s over folks. IN 25 years Havana will be a suburb of Miami and Gringos will own the joint. You cannot stop popular American culture from winning over your people. That’s why so many weak dictators forbid it under penalty of death, ie North Korea.
The embergo is what kept Castro in power. He’s has to be laughing his ass off over that. He outlived a shitload of tough talking America presidents because of it. This thing today has to hurt and it tells him: its over dude.
I’ve been to Cuba…many times. I’ll think I’ll build a wildlife photo tur company there…lets the gringos snap their Nikons and Canon at all those pretty birds. GO THERE…they love Americans, the Yank Tanks will blow your mind and the food is so damn good. It;s hot though…but they have nice cold drinks. Go…be an ambassador.
On edit: as for a “genuine democracy” they don’t know what that is. The USA embargoed and blocked all chances they might see one. They will now though.

I watched the 3 Marines that took down Old Glory so many years ago, return to hand over the Stars and Stripes to the 3 Marines that raised the flag today. It was a moving moment to see. Brought a tear to my eye…but I’m a sucker for those kind of things. And the band played on… So many years of unnecessary estrangement, long past a date to repeal, from the insistence on severing diplomatic ties by pandering politicians. Good short speech by Kerry too.
First thing Cuba may want to do is get their hands on some good ole American car parts to update the guts on some of those 50’s autos…jimmy-rigging them has probably run its course. But by all means, keep the exteriors…they’ll always remain a beloved classic for the island.

100% … The greatest concern will be to not screw it up - the thirst to jump on all of the pent up opportunity will be intense - and will have a high potential for ugly mutation - crazy growth.

On a recent visit to Cuba, I spent a week wandering around Havana, carring an old fashioned roll film camera. Among the few Spanish words I learned, ‘puedo’ (may I) was most useful when taking photos of people. I was, as an elderly foreign tourist, ignored by most people. The few people speaking English, who would approach me were either selling something or looking for a hand out. I fail to see how “we” are in any position to lecture any country about democracy or anything else for that matter.
I wonder if Kerry forgot that “we” own and operate a torture chamber/gulag on the very island where he is lecturing about democracy. Gitmo is not very democratic Mr. Kerry. Oligarchy is not democracy. People who live in glass houses …

He’s every bit culpable as dubya, dick the prick and Obama for their crimes against humanity and reign of terror worldwide. He’s despicable, another lying coward, they now populate our congress and entire administration. We don’t want this fascist terror regime destroying our lives, country and planet anymore, and Obama’s, biden’s and Kerry’s reign of terror is worldwide.

Genuine Democracy means something that doesn’t already exist.
I don’t believe that is what SOS Kerry is referring to.
American-like with very limited ability for the wannabe oligarchs maybe and without the militarism. A democracy based on the good and not the bad of existing democracies, that is what Kerry must mean.
