Discussion: Kerry Apologizes For Past LGBT Discrimination At State Department

It’s what the Democratic Party does best - apologize.

What’s next, the pizza delivery guy? Security made him wait all the time.

Trump: What a loser. No Apology needed, ever. No Gays, Trans or women will work in any capacity in my govt. Just White Males.

I am sorry, but this is not at the top of my list of State’s sins in the Obama years. I would like an apology for (1)the awful job State did in Iran negotiations, where they looked like, and I think were, on their news asking for a deal; its utter inability to get the Chinese and Russians to go along with meaningful sanctions against North Korea for building bombs; (3) for not getting Obama to bomb Syria, like Kerry wanted him to; (4) for allowing the NATO alliance to degenerate into a sniffling mess.; (4) foe allowing Susan Rice to go on air within 24 hours of the Benghazi attack with a story they had no idea was true or not. Worrying about who goes to what bathroom was yet another thing that lost us the election in paces like MI and PA. I am with Bernie— this is just not the most important thing we have to worry about in the moment.,

And just wait till later; LGBT’s, non-whites, progressives, etc.; the crackers are taking over.

Wow – a lot to unpack there harry.

Kerry was apologizing for decades of discrimination – not for what you consider the “sins” of the Obama years. Acknowledging the rampant past discrimination will perhaps make it a little harder for Tillerson to re-instate it.

“Worrying about who goes to what bathroom was yet another thing that lost us the election in paces like MI and PA” – must be lovely to have the privilege of reducing the real discriminatory harm to real people as a “bathroom” issue.

Does no one remember that the reason Joe McCarthy went after the State Department (“Foggy Bottom”) was because he claimed he had “lists” because State was filled with homosexuals with pinko leanings and their sexuality made them vulnerable to blackmail?

Yep, and they will be shooting any gays they find.

First, I’d like to be the first to console you during your ongoing crisis over Bernie losing the primary. As soon as we get that little crying fit out of the way, can you please explain through the tears why you think that gender identity and marriage rights are unimportant? Is it perhaps that you belong to a class that doesn’t feel the discrimination? Maybe you lack the empathy to feel the pain of your brothers and sisters who are denied basic rights based solely on their identity. Get a grip and start working for the team, or admit you were never on this team to begin with.

Once they have lost power that is. Seem like they should also be an apology for waiting to the last days and in addition promise to do it day one next time.

After watching The Imitation Game the only thing more surprising than only learning about Turing’s story in 2014, was learning that England had only apologize to the other gay men it had persecuted even later.

Applause! Plus, Harry’s minimization of other people’s problems also blames the victim. What he’s saying is akin to “trans people lost us the election.” What lost us the election is white Repubs’ deep-seated, wide-spread bigotry and small-mindedness.

Kerry’s apology only highlights what may be in store for LGBT staffers at the State Department once Trump takes office. Tony Perkins and other evangelicals that have Trump’s ear have loudly called for him to “ferret out” all LGBT staffers and allies.

I give it even odds that current LGBT discrimination protections are “quietly” rescinded when Trump re-issues his executive orders on employment.

I think Kerry is making a rather subtle double-dog dare-you to Tillerson and Co. By specifically pointing out that it is no longer tolerated, he’s drawing a contrast to a potential return to discrimination. Which might provide the RWNJs with red meat but go too far for the 60% who are now much more accepting of diversity.

Tillerson, to his credit, presided over the end of the Boy Scout ban on gay scouts. He may be under tremendous pressure from the culture warrior faction to roll back some of the improvements in treatment of employees, but I doubt it is at the top of his personal agenda to be engaging in some kind of pink purge.

But he’s shown again and again at Exxon Mobil that human rights are no where on his international agenda, and I somehow suspect that we’ll see much from this administration in terms of standing up for the rights of LGBTI folks around the world (well, expect for lots of language condemning a place like Iran… while ignoring the issues in Saudi or Egypt…)

(Of course he’ll still be a terrible SoS… even if discriminating against LGBTI State Department employees isn’t on his wish list.)

That apology is not one coming from the Democratic Party. It’s coming from a Democrat but that’s not who he’s apologizing for. He’s acknowledging a wrong. That’s also what Democrats do. They advocate. In this case for LGBT.

Lets not forget there was a time when the US gov had its own shameful history when they actively sought out gays and lesbians for termination considering them unfit for employment.Their story is worth remembering nit repeating

True, but it seems they’re always apologizing for something, more concerned about looking right - as they go over the falls.

I hear that…particularly from GOP’ers. Can you cite 3 examples of apology, actual apology, not what the GOP calls apology, from Democrats in the last year? Dealing with wrong the right way often entails apology at the start. I don’t see that as weak. I see running from doing the right thing as weak. lets not reinforce GOP’er memes. The Democrats don’t hate America and they don’t apologize when it’s done no wrong.

Can you cite anything in Kerry’s remarks that could be construed as blaming Trans folks causing the election loss?

Kerry’s a smart person and you probably are too. The election loss is a no brainier. 2 candidates. One willing to say whatever it took to win, the truth be damned, the other sticking mostly to reality. One telling you what you wanted to hear the other what you need to hear. One promising to help you fit into the future the other promising to bring back the past.

That’s all there was to it.

I was referring to the comment of another TPM member (Harry), not Kerry.
