All I can say about this horror is that we have a few months to gather data and use it to slam POT (“Party of Trump”) in the November election.
This is senseless and tragic on so many levels. We know that separating children from their parents leaves an empty hole that can never be filled. Most of these children have already suffered life-long harm and that will greatly be compounded if they are placed in indefinite foster care.
The Obama administration launched an intensive case management program that kept track of families who were charged with crossing the border unlawfully. Instead of detaining parents and children, the program connected them with services and helped assure they met their court dates. The results of the program were great – more than 99% of the families showed up in court when they were supposed to – but the current maladministration killed the program because it didn’t result in enough deportations. (!!!) Of course, it was about 9 times less costly than detention as well as vastly more effective. But no good idea sticks around long in Mango Mussolini-world.
It’s all part of the pogrom.
It’s also very important, but never mentioned, that there are also huge language barriers. Many of these kids don’t actually speak Spanish but, rather, indigenous languages.
