Discussion: Kentucky Governor, County Clerk In Standoff Over Same-Sex Marriage

“…what we will lose if we don’t take a stand for what we believe in today,”

Nope. That’s what YOU believe in not what SCOTUS ruled on. These sh*theads don’t believe that they are in the minority in their “beliefs” and that said minority doesn’t get to dictate the laws of the country.

I’m trying to think of other things a county clerk might decide are against their religious beliefs. Property is theft, so no more recording of deeds?

Yet Davis has no problem issuing a marriage license if one or both of the parties have been divorced.

FIRE him now.

I’m going to tell my boss that doing my TPS reports offend my fragile bigotry deeply held religious beliefs and see how long I’m still employed.

This man of God has taken a sworn oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States. Doesn’t his religion frown upon bearing false witness or can you pick your Commandments ala carte?

And, I agree, if he feels so strongly about his position, he should personally foot the bill for recalling the legislature.

Exactly. A marriage license only means you meet the requirements (and more importantly have paid the fee) to be married in this state. His job is explicitly not to judge the congruity of these eventual marriages with your personal biases. Do your job or quit. Those are the choices.

Funny. I’d expect KY to be a euphemistically-named “Right to work” state.

I think the dissenters will soon be writing a new “Book of Martyrs” and comparing themselves to Christians in Ancient Rome soon.

“May said he has been in contact with county clerks who are resisting the Supreme Court decision, advising them that Kentucky law states marriage licenses “shall be issued” by the county clerks and that KRS 522.020 could be used to prosecute the clerks for official misconduct, a Class “A” misdemeanor. A conviction could result in a judge ordering a clerk to be removed from office, May said.”

I get your sentiment, but in this case, the guy is trying a conscientious objector defense based on religious grounds. My guess is that the governor does not want that fight.

So we now have christian form of “sharia” law in Kentucky? Doesn’t this moron County Clerk understand that conducting government business within a religious belief system violates the Kentucky and US Constitutions?

If they’re worried about $60K a day, they should be equally worried about the cost of defending a federal civil suit against this bigot. I’ll bet you all the money in my retirement account that he happily issues licenses to opposite-sex adulterers, thieves, and those who dishonor their parents. Unless he’s refusing service to every single category of person who could be in any way subject to Biblical criticism, he’s a hypocrite who should be fired on the spot.

Sorry, but that dog don’t hunt.

There is no religious exemption from following the Constituyion if you’re a public official paid by the taxpayers.

If these clerks are so certain that theirs is a righteous cause, then they should not be worried about losing their jobs – God will provide for them.
You know, manna from heaven and so forth.

This Governor is a clear reminder why voters need to bust their ass to get more Democrats elected to Govenorships and other elected offices down-ticket.

Compare him to GOP Govenors such as Abbott or LePaige. Night and day.

Whoever wrote the main page headline is misleading people. That is not what the governor said at all.

“Guv To Defiant Clerk: Issue Gay Marriage Licenses Or You’re Fired”

This is exactly what Beshear is trying to avoid, a long, drawn out court case in which this Casey County moron makes himself out to be some kind of martyr, and I’m sure Beshear would especially like to avoid this during an election year in which KY Democrats are making what looks to be our last stand. I’m sure neither Beshear nor, Democratic Gubernatorial candidate and current KY Attorney General, Jack Conway wants to wade any further into this situation before November.

Of course you can. It’s properly called Cafeteria Christianity.
