Discussion: Kansas Guv Debate: 'There's Nothing I Can Do' About Gay Marriage

Discussion for article #229092

Hey gov…unless you are gay and want to get married…why would you want to DO anything…this genie will not be going back in the bottle…nor should it in an America that espouses “liberty and justice for all”

Saying you’re going to “defend the constitution” makes a nice sound bite and all, but if the SC rules the ban unconstitutional, what are his specific options at that point? That’s all he has, nice sound bites.

The vote to ban same sex marriage occurred in 2005. Given how public attitudes have changed in the past decade, it is far from clear what the result would be today. So even that castle is built on sand.

It doesn’t matter if 70% of Kansans—or 100%—voted to amend the state constitution with such a hateful ban on marriage equality.

The US Supreme Court has ruled at least 14 times since 1880 that marriage is a right in the US.

And our civil rights are not subject to a popular vote.

That’s why we call the rights.

So Davis is a mealy-mouthed, circulocuting pussy who won’t stand up and say what’s right. /golfclaps

No, he’s a Democrat running in deep-red Kansas, and his answer will keep him neck and neck with Brownback the Cretin.

State of Kansas Oath of Office:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Kansas, and faithfully discharge the duties of my office of employment. So help me God.”

Notice that, even in the Kansas Oath, the Constitution of the United States takes precedence.

Kansas is a perfect example of why your rights as an individual need to be protected by the Federal Government from the actions of the States. States are far more likely to violate your basic rights than the Feds.

But here’s the kicker. You know who I first heard that from, growing up? My high school American history teacher. A Republican. In Kansas. My how things have changed.

As someone who is allergic to wheat, I can’t really say that I have much use for Kansas.

Well, there’s sunflowers too. They make a big fuss about sunflowers. They’re like the Eiffel Tower of Kansas.

Memo to: Gov. Brownback Subject: The tide. Dear Governor, you cannot tell the tide not to come in. You’ll get drowned.

If Kansas again goes for Brownback, they will get what they deserve, and no amount of misery, and caterwauling will convince me to have sympathy for them.

Regarding Marriage Equality, it would be nice for a candidate, especially a Democrat to simply say. “Equality is equality. You’re either for it or against it, and I’m FOR it!”…but…Kansas.

I can still be mad about it! hehe

Brownback doesn’t care if the students in Kansas are getting short changed on their education. As long as it plays to his base, his Presidential ambitions, The Koch Bros and the rich getting huge tax breaks.

Kansas has been a TEA-hadist field experiment for some time now. The results are coming in and they’re very ugly and it may take a couple of decades to make things on the up and up again.

Of course the pseudo-conservatives will spout the “They didn’t go far enough to the right” excuse.

I have to admit I’m split on this one. I know this needs to be stopped and corrected, but part of me wants a clear and stark example of what these BS policies can do for the nation to see, and KS has the least to lose of the states trying this crap. (FL, PA and WI are just too big to fail in my eyes)

You’ll notice that Kansas farmers have yet to refuse USDA crop subsidies.

I think there was another case that came out of Kansas that dealt with denial of equal protection that had a big impact on both Kansas and the nation-Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas.

In times of lore it was King Canute and today it’s Governor Cannot.
