Have you ever applied for a job where you just knew you’d be good at it? That’s the vibe I got from these two. Whereas Trump literally does not know what the job is, or how he’d go about doing it.
But enough chatter—I’m doing some volunteer work right now for the local Dems, and tomorrow their headquarters opens up and there’s a lot of excitement. It feels good, you know? There’s a lot of us, we’re well funded, we’ve done this before, and oh man we are not fucking around. Join up with us and let’s go stomp their front teeth in. (With votes.)

This could be this year’s equivalent of then-Senator Obama’s line at the 2004 convention to be repeated and cherished: “E pluribus unum, out of many, one.” I hear cheering coming from Southwest states with big Latino populations. It’s about time they got their advocate on a presidential ticket.

What a nice intro. He came across as friendly, reflective, and even-keeled, and he was good at engaging the audience in a professorial way. But not the snarky know-it-all professor. The fun professor. He seems really approachable and complements Hillary nicely. And he’s solid on the issues, so hooray.

Got to love flexible Spanish word ordering. Kaine’s chosen phrasing puts the most important word last: todos – all. In English, “In this country we are Americans all.”

I watched it live, and was very impressed. The text of the speech was great, the delivery was good, the chemistry between the two of them worked (and was somehow energizing and calming at the same time, like we’d be in good hands with them at the helm), and it allayed any concerns that I had that Tim Kaine was not an engaging speaker. He was. The crowd was fired up and engaged and pulling for him.
I loved the format of the speech, and thought it was incredibly effective at weaving his and his wife’s formative years into their current world-view, and–more impressively–into the very fabric of America.
As an introduction, I don’t think it could have gone any better.
