Discussion: Jury: Polygamous Towns In AZ, UT Violated Constitutional Rights Of Nonbelievers

How come no one ever asks Orrin Hatch to denounce the lawbreakers who share his religion? Just sayin.

I’m not saying these people implement it in a healthy way, clearly they don’t. My problem is with the demonization of polyamorous love style in general. Now that gay is ok, poly is the new “ewww you’re gross and unnatural because you don’t love like the rest of us”. It’s unfortunate that most people only hear about groups like this that implement poly lifestyle in an unhealthy way and then make broad judgements against the entire idea.

Thanks for the response, and I do appreciate where you’re coming from. I’m not opposed on moral or religious grounds, since I think consenting adults should have the liberty to make up their minds. I’ve just never seen or heard of a poly case that worked without some of the parties involved being coerced or brainwashed, like the pseudo-cults in Utah and Arizona. That also takes place in mono couples and with the newest gay/lesbian members of the club, but repeating the same mistakes isn’t a good answer to move forward. Overall, I think the legal institution of marriage will change radically in the next 50-100 years with defined-term contracts, limited marriages, or even group marriages. It took us what, 500+ years to go from divorce being an issue of public law to moving away from the man/woman only model.

You, as an outsider, don’t need to go to a remote, polygamist-run town in Utah to face discrimination. Try being a graduate student looking for housing in the area around the University of Utah in SLC or Utah State University in Logan.

It was an excellent, well-researched documentary.

They aren’t actually married to more than one wife so they skate by on the legality issue. Unless some or all of the “sister wives” are working to support the large family they turn to government welfare. That is the problem with polygamy in a society where it takes a reasonable income to raise children, etc. Unless one of the adults is a millionaire it just isn’t very practical. Now polyandry on the other hand…

Fundamentalist religions in general practice a lot of mind control over their congregations. That becomes really horrifying when sex is a big part of the religion. Women & girls usually become victims not willing participants unless they are brainwashed from birth. People like Jeffs must be psychopaths to mistreat so many people. But the religious beliefs drummed into these people give him almost unlimited power. There are probably women (not underage girls) who would be willing to join a polygamous family if they didn’t expect/need exclusive sexual access to the male but wanted to have children. There are advantages in that they share household duties with other women and there are always babysitters available. The problem with legalizing polygamy is that the opportunities for abuse are so great. Bad enough with traditional families.

Overall, I think the legal institution of marriage will change radically in the next 50-100 years with defined-term contracts.

I totally agree. That was my evolution through the same sex marriage debate. We need both a legal and cultural overhaul on the whole idea of marriage from the ground up. As has been pointed out, the Republicans were right about one thing: traditional marriage is being destroyed. Same sex marriage isn’t the cause though, it’s just part of the change.
