Mormons have a lot of skeletons in their closets. Mitt Romney grandparents were polygamists who ran to Mexico to practice this way of life. There are still polygamist colonies in Mexico and Canada. Maybe food, clothing and shelter was cheaper there in Mexico. I cannot imagine a Catholic government providing much aid for this way of life.
The LDS church looks the other way and Rev is right â there isnât actual polygamy since usually there is only one married woman in the family. Disgusting bunch of people.
âShunningâ is a favorite weapon of religious cult members. Keeps people in line.
The Krakauer book is an education on this whole Mormon aberration. I was surprised at how many polygamists live in Ogden and other towns in Utah. It isnât just the Warren Jeffs cult group. And the church is certainly aware of these families. They are not the families with 20 -30 wives but they usually have 3-4 wives. It was one of these families that Krakauer wrote about because a horrific murder had brought them to the attention of the wider world.
but ⌠but ⌠but ⌠Religious Freedom !!! ⌠and Benghazi⌠etc
These people are crazy.
Damn. That actually also describes Trump, doesnât it? There are few absurd things that walking sentient toupee wonât believe.
As a typical North East liberal Yankee, I always ask myself, if polygamy is illegal, why do these scary religious sects continue without the law intervening? Do they just legally marry the first wife, and have unofficial weddings with the others? I imagine their tax situations must beâŚpuzzling at best!
Perhaps authorities might address the issue of the sectâs kingpin running the freakshow from his jail cell. Like moving him to a supermax in solitary?
They also have a huge problem with genetic mutations in their inbred babies. Kind of like the Amish do. It is horrifying hat in 2016 we allow these abusers to live freely commiting these crimes against women and children. When there are too many attractive boys competing with the old men for the girls they literally haul em out of their houses give them a small backpack and a small amount of money and tell them to leave and never come back. There is a woman who escaped this cult whose name eacapes me right now who works tirelessly to help these abandoned boys who are depressed lonely and ill equipped for the modern world to go to school, get de pprogramming counseling and make a life for themselves. No governmental organization seems to have the courage to deal with these nuts.
** I remember her name - Flora Jessop. She ought to get the Nobel Peace Prize.
I KNOW!
I live in Arizona! WE all know whatâs been going on in the âjeff warrenâ cult.
Wish congress and the senate would learn that lesson!
I always find it interesting that in muslim countries where polygyny is legal, itâs occurrence is rare. And the reason is that most people cannot afford it. The only reason these fundy mormons do it is because of gaming of the safety net.
The two towns swelled with non-believers during the Olympics, says another source.
My wife and I once attended a conference in Utah (outside SLC). We got in about 7 PM (after the sidewalks had been rolled up) and ended up at the local chain burger place for supper, because there wasnât much to choose from.
While we were sitting there consuming our homogenized American fare, a couple of Suburbans pulled into the lot and about 14 people came into the restaurant. There was a silver-haired male, four adult women of decreasing ages and children ranging from babes in arms (two of those) to mid-teens. I was oblivious until my wife poked me in the ribs and whispered, âLook up at the counter!â
âHuh?â
âLook up at the counter â is that a polygamous family?!?â
I looked, noticed the husbandâs solicitous behavior towards the younger women (the ones with babies) and said, âYeah, I guess thatâs a silverback and his harem.â
She poked me in the ribs again and said, âBehave yourself.â
So, yeah, the polygamists are all over Utah living quiet lives. Speaking for myself, I donât an issue with it in that guise. Adults can figure out the living arrangements that suit them. As long as everyoneâs making an informed judgement about things, I donât see it as my place to tell them what they can (or canât) do.
I do have a problem with it when people arenât making informed judgements about it â that is, marrying adolescent girls to middle-aged men. I do have a problem with it when it causes the society to neglect or abandon its male children. I do have a problem with it when it engenders line-breeding that exposes dangerous recessive genetic disorders.
I donât see how we have the first situation without permitting the second, so I guess Iâm against it.
Well, we arenât talking about romantic love, weâre talking about state-sanctioned legal arrangements between adults, and humanity has demonstrated from time immemorial that they donât work, and end poorly (polygamy)⌠of course, it getâs much easier when the societal rules around it ensure one side is virtual chattel. Perhaps we just need more reality shows demonstrating how an individual can have mutual consensual romantic partners in healthy relationships, but Iâve yet to observe them myself.
((((((((((shuddering)))))))))
Disclaimer - I work for Showtime, so grain of salt. But I cut a trailer for a documentary currently airing and available on demand/on the Showtime app that deals with this very group, titled Prophetâs Prey. Their âProphetâ Warren Jeffs is currently in jail for arranging multiple marriages with child brides, and he had quite a few of them himself. Itâs based on the investigative work, principally, of Sam Brower with more than a little help from Jon Krakauer. I had to watch it dozens of times for work, so trust me when I say itâs fascinating. What these people do in the name of their religion, and because their leader demanded it of them, is mind-boggling.
Easter should be fun.
