Discussion: Jury Finds Led Zeppelin Did Not Steal Riff For 'Stairway To Heaven'

I think randy california being a real musician would known better then pulling a law suit like this. Any bonified musician who know even the basics of music theory would know better.

Dixon’s own lyrics were often taken from earlier songs that were never published or copyrighted.

That said, this lawsuit is pretty ridiculous in suing over one small passage (albeit the most recognizable one) that only vaguely resembles one other small passage in Taurus, when as you point out they lifted big chunks in many other songs.

Always been a big fan of Spirit. “12 Dreams of Dr Sardonicus” was a great album that came out when I was in college, so we played it a bunch.

That being said, the FACT is that ALL music involves theft. Nothing new can or will be written which is 12 bars long. The quoting here is very approximate, and thank goodness for all current and future musicians that the ability to be influenced by others is not ended.

Its almost too the point, that it becomes difficult to find a song that Zeppelin didn’t steal at least some parts of…and I say this as a big Zeppelin fan. But they are not great innovators.

What I find kind of interesting is that the Stones were also blatant lifters of other’s works (though they had a much better track record of acknowledging the song writers). But the best Stones songs came out when they started writing their own stuff from the ground up, and even today, their worst stuff is stuff that they are covering or copying.

Except for the multiple failed attempts at Reggae. Every one of those is just straight up horrifying.

I miss the days when they did great country blues covers. Their version(s) of Love in Vain really were wonderful.

As an avid collector or vinyl back in the day ( I still have over 700 albums), including quite a few bootlegs…that I have absolutely no idea how they ended up in my collection…one thing I have always said about the Stones…

…they can never play a song exactly the same twice. There is always something a little different, and usually a lot that’s very different…in every take. Now, they have gotten a bit more repetitive on the concert tours in the later years, but any out takes or live songs from the Jones or Taylor years is always worth the listen. because the song will be different.

That entire album is actually quite amazing. Besides being one of the very best, it was also the one that Richards was basically on his own (in between Jones and Taylor)…he even got heavily involved in the engineering. And such an amazing tapestry of sounds…from hard Midnight Rambler, to Love in Vain to Country Honk to Gimme Shelter, they were just hitting all cylinders.

But if you like the country sounding Stones…don’t overlook Beggar’s Banquet…Prodigal Son, Factory Girl, Salt of the Earth, Oh Doctor…that’s probably the best album for that sound, IMO.

For sure-No Expectations and You’ve Got the Silver have the most soul of anything Stones have done, imo.
