Discussion for article #225686
“Olsen said Kyle’s claims that Ventura said he … thought the U.S. military was killing innocent civilians in Iraq…”
And that’s considered defamatory? It’s factual. How can that attribution be defamatory?
Good for the mind.
Ventura will pay is lawyers the 1.5 million.
Jesse ain’t got time to bleed.
So rarely these days, does anyone win a defamation suit. This is good to see.
Perhaps the assholes ruining peoples’ lives for money, will think twice now, and so will their publishers.
Customary, in civil suits for the lawyers to get a third of the award, no?
If the attribution was false.
Meaning, Jesse never said it.
Glad to see he won - didn’t think it was possible and the burden of proof was steep.
Knowing Jesse, he probably did say that the US was killing innocent civilians in Iraq, but no way would he have said that he hates America. Not a chance.
No, making a fraction of the money earned from a guy that lied and trashed his reputation.
Depends on the case. This isn’t a simple auto accident. A defamation case brought by a public figure is very hard to win. He might have a hard time keeping it on appeal. Most lawyers would charge hourly. Some might charge 50%. Only the most eager would charge 1/3.
Asked for 5-15 million and got $1.5 million. Sounds like the jury saw some fault in everyone.
got time to duck?
Ventura has always maintained he only served in the IDT (who later were folded into the SEALS) during Vietnam. He has NEVER mentioned any operational facts, never tried to write a book about how brave he was doing X, Y, or Z mission, (and how great HE was at it), never disparaged anyone who actually SERVED in the Military for their service. He has said some very harsh (and profane and sometimes really, really stupid) things about POLITICIANS, and ENTERTAINERS, and people who glorify their own actions after they get out of the Military (like Kyle who made up a complete marketing and merchandising empire based on his “skill” at killing people at a distance.) Ventura can be (and frequently is) a massive asshole but he has been very consistent in his relationship with the SEALS.
This trial was followed in excruciating detail here in Minnesota, and the outcome seems fair (the defendant’s Lawyers were IDIOTS to agree to a split-decision, they must have really feared a mistrial and further discovery, or plan on using it as a basis of appeal.)
Whether Ventura will ever see a dime of the award is another matter as the defendant will most likely appeal.
BAM! Good going Jesse.

“One-point-five million people have bought the book,” he said. “Millions more heard Fox TV trash JesseVentura because of it. And the story went viral on the Internet and will be there forever.”
Not quite. Eventually the sun will engulf the earth, and the story will be gone.
As we sit chatting here so pleasantly, the story has been radiating outward at the speed of light for over four years, past the outer planets, past the Kuiper belt, through the Oort cloud, in a spherical wavefront of defamation - already it has reached the nearest star system to our own. There is nothing that can stop it now, long after the earth is swallowed up and the Sun has burnt to a cinder the story will still be there, an enormous fib 10 billion light years across. It’s possible that the universe will never stop expanding, and the defamation will go right on growing too until the OK forget it you get the idea.
defamation verdict easily overturned on appeal.
…thought the U.S. military was killing innocent civilians in Iraq…
So wait! Does this mean that the US military never killed any civilians, women or children in Iraq?
Somebody’s living in a fantasy world if they believe that.
