They portray themselves as victims fighting for what was a lost cause. They confederate army were traitors and all their descendants are. The South still calls it “the war between the states.” Not quite. It was the Federal government against people trying to overturn the government.

A country can go from relative democracy to an autocracy in a heartbeat.
Trump could, for ex, issue preemptive pardons when indictments come down, call out the military to surround the WH with troops and armored vehicles, then round up the usual suspects open detention centers as during the red scare of the 1920s. He could have troops occupy the House and Senate chambers suspending deliberation. All this would be orchestrated by one of his staff generals. 1/3 of our citizens would support him in this. Never forget that Hitler was elected.

One thing we know he won’t do is denounce these hate groups, anymore than he denounced the bombing at a Mosque in Minnesota, where violence was waged against those practicing their religion, and whose right to practice that religion is protected by our Constitution. As the protector of the Constitution…I seriously doubt DJT has even read our founding document. Instead, the WH allowed a white nationalist to come out and make a statement accusing the left of staging the bombing as a hoax. Nothing about protecting religious freedom. This is horrifying. Fascism is alive and well in this White House. These people are his hardcore base.

Minor point. Hitler wasn’t elected. He was appointed by von Hindenburg as a minority Chancellor. von Hindenburg and the industrialists thought Hitler could be controlled, since von Hindenburg had veto powers as President. Then von Hindenburg died…

No we shouldn’t try and understand him. He’s a piece of shit.
But we shouldn’t throw out the baby with the bathwater either. There are people who vote who do have legitimate economic concerns, and we ignore those concerns at the Democratic Party’s peril.
